Sophomore
Conner Olsen has started this fall season with a ten game winning streak over the course of three tournaments. Last spring season Olsen won his only spring singles match against UC Riverside, as well as his doubles match with
Jonas Maier. Overall, he went 6-5 last year in singles, a mark already surpassed by his 10-1 singles record this fall.
ArizonaWildcats.com sat down with Olsen to talk about the new season and his time at the University of Arizona.
Q: What is your favorite thing here at the University of Arizona?
A: Outside of tennis, I like to hang out with the guys, teammates, we are all really close. We are all pretty social guys, so when the practice week ends it's nice that we can all take a little break, sit down and watch other sports which I love to do as well.
Q: How did you first get into tennis?
A: I first started tennis at a club when I was younger, probably about seven years old, just at camps really. It was just a day camp me and my siblings went to and tennis was one of the things we did every day. I found a joy in going to that every day and as I played it more I got a little better. I liked the challenge of it and I liked the fact that it's just you versus one person on the court.
Q: What ways do you pump yourself up before a match or a tournament?
A: I get pumped up pretty easily, just the moment I step on the court. I don't do a lot before. I just try to eat a nice meal beforehand. I like to eat not close to the match at all because I like to feel as light as possible out there. I normally listen to calmer music. I don't really like the super pump up or rap because I like to calm my mind. Then when I get on the court, the game just takes over for itself.
Q: What is your goal for the team this year?
A: To meet our expectations and I think to meet our expectations one of those things would be to make it to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in a long time. I'm hoping to do my part for that, we have a really talented team. We only lost one guy and brought in three new people. Not even meet our potential, but go above and beyond what we are supposed to do which I think all of the guys can do. We are all hungry and excited for the spring season.
