Cats Sweep Ducks on Road

EUGENE, Ore. -- The Arizona Wildcats picked up their first road conference win of the season Friday night, beating Oregon in straight sets (25-20, 27-25, 25-21) at Matthew Knight Arena. The emphatic sweep improved Arizona to 13-14 on the season and 3-12 in Pac-12 play.

Junior outside hitter Paige Whipple led Arizona with a match-high 18 kills, while also adding in six digs. Senior setter Julia Patterson had a match-high 33 assists from her spot, while also contributing six and five kills. Devyn Cross also reached double-digit kills with 10. Kamaile Hiapo had a team-high 11 digs, while Makenna Martin added 10 for the Cats, who snapped a four-game losing streak and secured a season sweep of the Ducks.

"I continue to be impressed with how resilient they are from one match to the next," coach Dave Rubio said. "I just admire their ability to stay in the present and stay focused on that particular match and not worry about what happened last week or what will happen next match. They really fought tonight and I could not be more proud of their effort and their willingness to be prepared and play against a good team."

The Wildcats won a spirited first set over the Ducks to take the early lead in the match. Arizona jumped out to a 6-3 lead, which was quickly erased by Oregon thanks to a 5-0 run. Rubio called a timeout to regroup with his squad, and it worked.

The Cats eventually went on a 7-0 run to take a 16-12 lead. Martin, starting her first match of the season at a new position, outside hitter, had the hot service hand during the run, and got some help from Patterson, who had a sparkling kill off a fake set.

The Cats led from there the remainder of the set. Oregon tried to cut into the lead with a 3-0 run to make it 22-19. But Rubio again called a timeout and the Cats won three of the last four points to win the set 25-20. Whipple had a set-high five kills and also added five digs in the set. Patterson had eight assists, three kills and a pair of digs. Arizona had 20 digs in the first set as a team.

In the second set, Arizona used a late, dramatic comeback to earn the win and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Arizona trailed 20-18, 22-20 and 24-22 in the set. But with Oregon facing match point, Arizona won an extended rally courtesy of a kill from Whipple to pull within one point.

On the next play, Cross notched a kill to pull the Cats even at 24. Oregon won the next point to go up 25-24 and again have a match point. But Patterson registered a kill to tie it at 25. Arizona won the next point on an attack error to grab a 26-25 lead. A Hiapo ace then ended the set and gave Arizona a 27-25 win.

The second set featured 12 ties and six lead changes. Whipple had six kills in the set to give her a match-high 11 through two sets. Patterson had 12 assists in the set to give her 20 through two sets. The Cats also held the Ducks to just .184 hitting in the second set after Oregon hit just .175 in the first.

Oregon again jumped out to an early lead in the third set, using a 6-0 run to grab a 10-6 lead. Arizona answered right back with a 5-0 run to take an 11-10 lead thanks to a kill from Whipple.

Oregon eventually grabbed a 19-17 lead as the Ducks furiously tried to push the match to a fourth set. But Arizona answered yet again with a 5-0 run to take a 22-19 lead. Whipple then had back-to-back kills to put Arizona up 24-21 and one point away from the match win. It ended the very next point when Patterson set up Cross for the game-winning kill.
