TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona freshman libero
Kamaile Hiapo has been named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. This is Hiapo's first career recognition and Arizona's first weekly conference award of the season.
Hiapo was instrumental in Arizona's weekend road sweep of Oregon and Oregon State, the Wildcats' first conference sweep of the season.
The freshman returned to her natural position of libero this weekend after spending the previous four weeks at outside hitter due to injury and had a record-setting performance in the process. Hiapo had 40 total digs in the two matches, including a career-high 29 vs. Oregon State, the most by a freshman in a single match in Arizona history, breaking her own record (27) set earlier this season.
Hiapo averaged 5.00 digs per set, leading the Wildcat defense, which was key in Arizona's weekend sweep. She added eight assists (1.00/set) and two aces (0.25/set) on the weekend.
Her 11 digs on Friday and 29 on Sunday mark her 14th and 15th double-digit-dig matches this season. Hiapo's 29 digs on Sunday gave her 301 for the season, making her the fifth Wildcat freshman to cross the 300-dig plateau. With four matches remaining in the regular season, Hiapo needs 69 digs to become Arizona's all-time leader in digs by a freshman.
On the season, Hiapo leads the Wildcats and is 11th in the Pac-12, averaging 3.31 digs/set despite playing a trio of positions -- libero, defensive specialist and outside hitter -- while simultaneously battling a hamstring injury suffered Sept. 28 at USC.Â
UP NEXT: Hiapo and the Wildcats return home for the final four matches of the 2019 Pac-12 season, beginning this weekend with Washington (Friday) and Washington State (Sunday).
