TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (4-7, 2-6) and Arizona State Sun Devils (6-5, 3-5) will face off this Saturday, Nov. 30 for the 93rd edition of the Territorial Cup, the nation's oldest rivalry trophy contest. The game is slated for an 8:00 p.m. MST kickoff with a television broadcast on ESPN.

A complete game preview is below.

Arizona Notes & Numbers

  • asu game capsuleThe Arizona Wildcats will travel to Tempe to take on Arizona State where the two sides will play for the Territorial Cup, which the NCAA recognizes as the nation's oldest rivalry trophy game.
  • Arizona leads the rivalry series 21-19-1 since the two programs joined the Pac-10/12. Arizona State holds a slight 6-4 edge over the last 10 matchups.
  • Arizona junior linebackers Colin Schooler, Tony Fields II and Anthony Pandy all recorded double-digit tackles last week against No. 7 Utah. Schooler is 12 tackles away from his second consecutive 100-tackle season. The Wildcats have not had a player record back-to-back 100-tackle seasons since Marcus Bell in 1998 and 1999.
  • The Wildcats are one of five programs nationally with a 6,000-yard career passer (Khalil Tate) and a 3,000-yard career rusher (J.J. Taylor). Arizona is joined by Utah, SMU and Vanderbilt. Tate has 6,090 career passing yards, while Taylor has rushed for 3,215 yards.
  • Taylor has accumulated 4,630 career all-purpose yards, which is the seventh-highest total by an active FBS player. It's the third-highest by a Power 5 player behind Wisconsin's Jonathan Taylor and Minnesota's Rodney Smith.
  • Arizona junior linebacker Colin Schooler is averaging 5.47 solo tackles per game in his career, which leads all active players in the FBS. He has 197 solo tackles in 36 career games. Teammate Tony Fields II is averaging 4.94 solo tackles per game, which ranks fourth among all active FBS players.
  • Senior cornerback Jace Whittaker notched his 34th career pass breakup Saturday against Utah. He is one away from tying Kelly Malveaux for third all-time in program history.
4: Cornerback Lorenzo Burns picked up his fourth interception of the season Saturday against Utah. Over the last 10 seasons, an Arizona player has had four interceptions or more in a season just four times. Burns is responsible for half of those as he had five in 2017.

6,090: Khalil Tate enters the final game of his career with 6,090 career passing yards, which rank fifth-most in program history. Tate passed Alfred Jenkins earlier this month and will likely finish fifth with Anu Solomon at 6,922 yards in fourth place.

43.5: Colin Schooler has 43.5 career tackles-for-loss, which is fifth-most by an active FBS player. It's also tied for the fifth-highest total in program history.

19: The Wildcats have 19 rushing touchdowns in 11 games this season. Arizona had 14 rushing scores all of last season.

65.2: Freshman QB Grant Gunnell is completing 65.2 percent of his passes this season. That currently ranks as the fourth-best single-season mark ever by an Arizona quarterback and would be the best mark ever by an Arizona freshman signal-caller.

THE TERRITORIAL CUP: The Territorial Championship Cup was first presented to Tempe Normal School after its 11-2 victory over Arizona at Tucson's Carrillo Gardens field downtown on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 30, 1899. That makes it the oldest rivalry trophy game in America (Comparisons: Michigan-Minnesota/Little Brown Jug/1909; Indiana-Purdue/Old Oaken Bucket/1925). Carrillo Gardens was in a downtown park on a side street south of the current Tucson Convention Center in the Barrio Historico district. The Cup has been registered with the NCAA and thereby sanctions the game as the oldest trophy game. Early origins of the piece are unclear but the cup itself is silver-plated over base metal and was manufactured by Reed and Barton of Taunton, Mass., according to some reports, which also indicate a catalog price of $20. The lone inscription reads: "Arizona Foot Ball League 1899 Normal." The Cup's whereabouts for the next eight decades also remains unclear until its discovery among items found in the basement of a church near ASU in the early 1980s and then displayed in various ASU collections. In 2001, then ASU President Lattie Coor led the move to have it again presented to the game winner. Over the years the Governor's Trophy (1953-1979) and a "Victory" sculpture by artist Ben Goo (1979-1997) were presented to the game's winner. The Saguaro Trophy, a bronze piece commissioned from artist Dora Perry in 1998, also has been in the mix, and now goes to the winning coach each year. The Bob Moran Most Outstanding Player in the game, named in 2008 after the late sportswriter who covered both teams, earns the Ben Goo sculpture for his school's hall of fame. The Cup on the sideline at the game itself is a replica, with the original piece requiring curator treatment for its hall of fame type display. The games themselves are not atypical of a state where the Territorial Legislature awarded one city (Phoenix) the initial economic prize, the state hospital, while the other town (Tucson) got the fledgling first state university. The games are competitive, territorial and a distinct matter of pride.
