Cats Clinch Series with Second Straight Run-Rule Shutout

TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 12 Arizona clinched its Pac-12-opening series with Oregon, winning game 2 by the same score, 8-0, and in similar fashion as its game 1 victory. The Cats blanked the Ducks in five innings on Saturday afternoon.

Dejah Mulipola hit two more home runs in the game, her second and third of the weekend, fifth and sixth in UA's last five games, and 12th and 13th of the season. The Wildcat catcher is now tied with teammate Jessie Harper for the Pac-12 lead, one off the NCAA pace.

Mulipola's homers were two of UA's three in the game; Jenna Kean blasted her first of the season. The three long balls accounted for seven of the Cats' eight runs; Rylee Pierce had a walkoff single to end the game in the fifth.

Arizona now has seven home runs in the series and 49 this season. The Cats lead the country, averaging 1.82 home runs per game.

Gina Snyder improved to 4-0 on the season with the victory. The senior allowed two hits over four scoreless innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Marissa Schuld pitched a scoreless fifth to complete the combined shutout.

Both Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza and Reyna Carranco hit doubles on Saturday to extend their season-long hitting streaks to nine games apiece.

Arizona (20-7, 2-0) Pac-12 will now go for the sweep on Sunday. Arizona is looking for its first sweep of the Ducks (11-12, 0-2 Pac-12) since 2007 and its third straight season with a Pac-12-opening sweep.

KEY INNINGS

Bottom 1: Reyna Carranco extended her hitting streak to nine games with a one-out double down the right field line. Jessie Harper followed with a single to put runners on the corner for Dejah Mulipola, who hit her second homer of the weekend and fifth in as many games. (3-0, UA)

Bottom 4: Mulipola led off the bottom of the fourth inning with her second home run to give the Cats a 4-0 lead. Ivy Davis was hit by a pitch and Rylee Pierce doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third with just one out and chase Oregon starter Jordan Dail (9-7) in favor of Kailey Krueger. Krueger struck out the first batter she saw before Jenna Kean blasted a three-run home run inside the right field foul pole to put the Cats up by a touchdown. (7-0, UA)

Bottom 5: Jessie Harper singled to start the bottom of the first, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on an error. Rylee Pierce singled her home to end the game in five innings. (8-0, UA)
