Men's Golf Arizona Athletics

Cats Head to NorCal for The Goodwin

TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona men's program is headed to Stanford, Calif. to compete in the 50th edition of The Goodwin. The three-day tournament will span the 28th-30th at the newly renovated Stanford Golf Course, with morning tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The Goodwin has a large field of 26 teams competing for the championship title including 5th ranked Oklahoma, 6th ranked USC, 11th ranked Cal, 14th ranked Pepperdine, and 16th ranked SMU. Florida, San Diego, UNLV, McNeese State, Washington, Santa Clara, Colorado, San Francisco, BYU, UC Davis, Northwestern, St. Mary's, San Jose State, Toledo, Villanova, Nova Southeastern, George Washington, Nevada, Nebraska, and host Stanford round out the competition.

"Stanford will present a completely different set of challenges this week," commented head coach Jim Anderson.  "Parts of the golf course were recently redone and scoring is generally more challenging on the par-70 course at sea level.  The weather forecast is generally good, but it will be cool and damp compared to what we have seen the past month. We scheduled this tournament because we have great players on our team from this area of California and an NCAA Regional will be played there in a little over a month.  We will do our best to put the ball in play from the tee and generally, scoring opportunities will follow on the challenging set up."

The Cats will be taking sophomore Trevor Werbylo, junior David Laskin, senior Ethan Marcus, sophomore Drake Mendenhall, and junior Brad Reeves up to Northern California. Laskin, Reeves, and Mendenhall will be going back home, as they are all from the Bay Area.

Werbylo is looking to continue his hot spring season, after breaking a program record last week at the N.I.T. The Tucson local is averaging 70.41 this season. David Laskin has had five top 20 finishes this season and 13 rounds at par or better coming into the last couple events of the season. Reeves will be competing in his 9th tournament of the season, who along with Werbylo and Laskin, have been anchors in the lineup.

Marcus will be competing in his fifth consecutive tournament this spring, where he's been averaging 71.20. Drake Mendenhall will be competing in his first tournament in the Wildcat lineup.
