TUCSON, Ariz. – Top-ranked Florida State took advantage of seven Wildcat walks, three of which that would come around to score, in a 5-3 Seminole victory over No.12 Arizona in game 1 of this weekend's three-game series at Hillenbrand Stadium.
Taylor McQuillin struck out nine Seminoles in six innings in the start and gave up five runs on six hits with seven walks and one hit batsmen. She fell to 7-5 with the loss.
Hanah Bowen pitched a perfect seventh inning with one K in relief.
Arizona plated three runs on five hits off of Florida State ace Meghan King, who struck out three and walked two in the game. King improved to 11-1 on the season with the win.
In a matchup between the two top home run hitting teams in the country, each recorded one on Friday night.
Dejah Mulipola homered off King, her eighth of the season and just fourth home run that King has allowed in 13 games this year. Cali Harrod hit a two-run home run for Florida State.
Alyssa Palomino had the Wildcats' other two RBI in the game with a two-run double in the fourth.
KEY INNINGS
Top 1: Florida State scored two in the first inning, taking advantage of a couple of McQuillin walks. (2-0, FSU)
Bottom 3: The 2-0 lead stood until the bottom of the third when
Hannah Martinez became the first batter to reach base against King with a one-out single.
Jenna Kean followed with a walk and then
Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza doubled them home to tie the game.
Reyna Carranco followed with an infield single to put two on with only one out for the UA 3-4 hitters, but King retired them in order to preserve the tie. (2-2)
Top 4: Florida State responded with a two-run homer in the next half inning to reclaim the lead. (4-2, FSU)
Top 6: McQuillin retired the first two Seminoles of the sixth before walking the next three to load the bases, followed by an RBI HBP to add to the lead. (5-2, FSU)
Bottom 6: Dejah Mulipola crushed her eighth home run of the season, a solo shot off the batter's eye in center field, to get the Cats within two. (5-3, FSU)
Bottom 7: Carli Campbell led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a pinch-hit walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but King retired the next three Wildcats in order to end the game.
UP NEXT
Arizona (17-6) and Florida State (24-1) will meet in game 2 on Saturday at 6 p.m. MST.
