Dyer Extends Hit Streak as Cats Fall to the Cardinal, 13-3

STANFORD, Calif. – The Arizona Wildcats (19-21, 7-13) dropped game two to the No. 3 Stanford Cardinal (30-7, 14-3) by a final score of 13-3 on Saturday night at Sunken Diamond, evening the series at one game apiece.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI triple from catcher Austin Wells and an RBI groundout from third baseman Nick Quintana. The lead didn't hold long though, as the Cardinal would score four in the bottom of the frame to take a lead they would not surrender.

First baseman Matthew Dyer kicked off that first inning rally with a one-out double down the left field line that extended his hit streak to 17 games. His current streak is tied for the longest posted by a Wildcat player during head coach Jay Johnson's tenure, and stands as the sixth longest logged at Arizona since 1998.

The Cats scored once more in the top of the seventh on an RBI single through the right side by Wells. The run-scoring single gave the freshman two RBI on the night and 36 on the year, the second most RBI on the team.

Right fielder Ryan Holgate (2x5) and Wells (2x4, R, 3B, 2 RBI, BB) registered the Wildcats only two multi-hit performances of the night. Quintana (1x3, RBI, 2 BB), Dyer (1x4, R, 2B, BB), and center fielder Donta Williams (1x3, R, BB) all reached base multiple times.

Relievers Randy Abshier (0.2 IP) and Cameron Haskell (1.1 IP) closed out the game for Arizona with a pair of scoreless relief outings. They combined to allow just one hit and struck out two.

Arizona and Stanford will conclude their series with the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at Sunken Diamond. First pitch for the Sunday series finale is set for 1:05 p.m. MST.
