Tucson, Ariz.. – Saturday night saw the conclusion of the Jim Click Shootout at Roy P. Drachman Stadium. The Cats took third on both the men's and the women's side with the men scoring 134 and the ladies finishing with 132.5. Leading the Cats was sophomore
Jordan Geist, who was named the Men's Athlete of the Meet and
James Smith who clocked the Arizona Freshman 400-meter hurdle record.
Athlete of the Meet
Sophomore
Jordan Geist amassed 30 points towards the team total winning all three events he competed in. He set the Arizona school record in the shot put with a toss of 21.28m (69-9.75) to set an outdoor PR. Geist now owns the No. 1 mark in the NCAA, Pac-12 Conference and holds the indoor and outdoor shot put school records. He threw a mark of 67.40m (221-1) in the hammer throw to set a new PR. The mark ranks him No. 4 in the Arizona record book. He wrapped up the discus throw with a mark of 53.16m (174-5).
First Time's the Charm
In his first collegiate 400-meter hurdle race, freshman
James Smith set the Arizona Freshman Record in 50.29. Smith finished second overall to score eight points to the team total. His mark is good for the No. 5 mark in the NCAA and No. 2 in the Pac-12 Conference.
Villarreal Sets Season-Best
Carlos Villarreal clocked a time of 1:47.54 in the 800-meter run. He won the event, scoring 10 points to the team total. His mark is good for a share of the No. 3 mark in the NCAA & the No. 1 mark in the Pac-12 Conference.
Neysia Had a Night
Freshman
Neysia Howard set three PRs in the Jim Click Shootout. She opened with a mark of 6.00m (19-8.25) in the long jump. The freshman clocked a time of 11.76 in the 100-meter dash and 24.14 in the 200-meter dash. She also contributed on the ladies 4x100-meter relay tam that clocked a time of 44.81 and 4x400-meter relay team that finished second in 3:37.06,
Jumpin' Like Justice
Justice Summerset cleared a season-best 2.20m (7-2.5) to win the high jump event. The mark ranks No.1 in the Pac-12 Conference.
Justin Lewis cleared a season-best height of 2.14m (7-0.25) to finish third. The duo combined for 16 points towards the men's score.
Up next, the throws squad will head to San Diego, Calif. to compete in the Triton Invitational beginning on Friday, April 12th.
