FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. --The Arizona women's golf team will defend its National Championship this week at Blessings Golf Club in Arkansas at the NCAA Championships. The Wildcats advanced after placing second in the East Lansing Regional last week. Arizona is looking to become the first team to win back-to-back National Championships since Duke won three straight from 2005 to 2007.
The 24-team field will compete in three days of stroke play starting on Friday, May 17th. After three rounds, the field will be narrowed down to the top 15 teams. The fourth round of stroke play will take place on Monday, May 20th to determine which eight teams will move on to match play. The quarterfinals and semifinals of match play take place on Tuesday, May 21st with the championship match taking place on the following day.
The Wildcats enter the NCAA Championship playing some of their best golf of the season. Sophomore Yu-Sang Hou has six top-ten finishes this season, including a fourth-place finish last week at the NCAA Regionals. Seniors Haley Moore and Bianca Pagdanganan are both coming off top-ten finishes at the regionals as well. Freshman Ya Chun Chang has not placed outside of the top 16 since early February, and junior Sandra Nordaas has finished every tournament inside the top 40 since the first tournament of the season.
"We're very excited," coach Laura Ianello said. "We've arrived in Arkansas. We walked the course Wednesday. It's a very challenging golf course. It's going to be a lot of challenging play here. The course is playing long. I do feel our players, especially our longer hitters, will have a big advantage here. It's a long week ahead. We are trying to make sure the ladies are in good spirits. We look to have a great go at it."
The final round of stroke will be broadcast on Golf Channel, as will every round of match play. The first round begins at 5:30 a.m. MST on Friday, May 17th.
