All-Time Series: Arizona leads, 4-0
Last Meeting: Arizona beat Penn State, 10-1, at the 2004 Round Rock College Classic in Round Rock, Texas
Leading Off...
- The Wildcats have reached the penultimate week of the season and travel across the country for a three-game series against the Big Ten's Penn State Nittany Lions.
- Arizona and Penn State have played each other just twice in program history, with the Wildcats holding a 2-0 all-time series lead. Most recently, Arizona beat Penn State, 10-1, at the 2004 Round Rock College Classic in Round Rock, Texas.
- Catcher Austin Wells' 63 runs scored are the most by an Arizona freshman since Damon Mashore had 64 in 1989. His 47 RBI are the most by a Cats freshman since Joey Rickard had 51 in 2010. Wells' .352 batting average is the best freshman mark since Nick Hundley hit .361 in 2003.
- With three more RBI, Austin Wells would become just the second Arizona freshman since 1976 to log 50 runs scored and 50 RBI in a season.
- Infielder Cameron Cannon has hit 27 doubles this season, the most among all Division I players in the country.
- Arizona has logged 88 consecutive games scoring at least one run, giving the Cats the longest active scoring streak in the Pac-12. The Wildcats were last shut out March 17, 2018 at Washington, over 420 days ago. Arizona hasn't gone an entire season without being shut out since 2013.
NOW TRENDING: The Wildcats have won four straight games, and seven of their last eight dating back to May 3...The Nittany Lions have won two in a row after dropping four games in a row from May 4-11...Arizona has gone 14-10 against nonconference opponents this season with a .336 batting average...Arizona and Penn State have played each other just twice in program history, with the Wildcats holding a 2-0 all-time series lead...Most recently, Arizona beat Penn State, 10-1, at the 2004 Round Rock College Classic in Round Rock, Texas...The Wildcats high-powered offense has been at peak performance recently, having collected 10 or more hits in nine straight games and in 12 of the last 13 contests...Through eight games in the month of May, Arizona has averaged 13.9 runs per game.
KNOW YOUR FOE: Penn State enters the series with an overall record of 22-24 and a Big Ten conference record of 4-18, landing them in last place...The Nittany Lions are led by sixth-year head coach Rob Cooper, who has steered Penn State to an overall record of 119-184 during his time in State College...The best hitter for the Nittany Lions this season has been Jordan Bowersox, who has logged a batting average of .303 with 27 runs scored and 15 RBI...The Penn State pitching staff is led by starting pitcher Dante Biasi, who has gone 3-5 with a 2.48 ERA in 69.0 innings this year, and reliever Mason Mellott, who has gone 6-3 with a 2.36 ERA and five saves across 61.0 innings of work.
SINCE LAST TIME: Since the last set of game notes, the Wildcats have gone 4-0 with a two-game series sweep over USC last weekend and a doubleheader sweep of Sam Houston State on Monday night...Over that stretch, Arizona has hit .396 (55x139) and scored an average of 12.5 runs per game...The pitching staff has also been strong during the last four games, posting a 3.18 ERA (12ERx34.0IP) while striking out 27 batters in 34 innings of work...Three players have hit over .550 during the last four games: infielder
Cameron Cannon (.611/11x18), outfielder
Branden Boissiere (.571/8x14), and
Nick Quintana (.571/8x14)...Those three players have combined to score 24 runs and pick up 23 RBI.
HANG 10: Across the last ten games for Arizona — dating back to April 28 at No. 2 Stanford — the Wildcats have been on a tear at the plate, hitting .393 and averaging 12.9 runs per game...Even if you remove the Cats 28-run explosion in the series finale against Oregon from the equation, Arizona is scoring 11.2 runs per game...During this 10-game stretch, four qualified players have posted a batting average over .400, while eight have hit above the .300 mark...Infielder
Cameron Cannon has led the charge across this period, hitting .511 (23x45) with 17 runs scored, six doubles, one triple, two home runs, 15 RBI, a .822 slugging percentage, and a .579 on-base percentage...
Nick Quintana has averaged 2 RBI per game over the last 10 games, and currently leads the team and the Pac-12 with 66 RBI on the year.
IT'S HOW YOU FINISH: Since the calendar rolled over to May, Arizona has gone 7-1, including a perfect 5-0 mark in Pac-12 conference play...Under the leadership of head coach

RISPY BUSINESS: Arizona junior third baseman
Nick Quintana has picked up 66 RBI this season, enough to lead the team and the Pac-12 while ranking sixth among all Division I players in the country...The Wildcats haven't had a player finished among the top 15 in the nation in RBI since Rob Refsnyder collected 66 RBI to tie for 12th in 2012...Quintana has improved in this category every year he's been at Arizona, having collected 38 RBI as a freshman 2017 and 55 in 2018 as a junior...He has accomplished this largely by thriving at the plate with runners in scoring position — for his career he has hit .349 with runners on second or third base...This year he has logged a batting average of .386 (34x88) with RISP, the second-best mark on the team among players with at least 50 AB with RISP, behind only
Cameron Cannon, who has hit .406 (28x69) with RISP.
FRESHMAN FRENZY: Freshman catcher/first baseman
Austin Wells has put together one of the most compelling Freshman All-American campaigns in the country, and has cemented himself as one of Arizona's top freshman performers in recent history...Currently, his .352 batting average, 63 runs scored, and 47 RBI all stand as the fourth-best marks posted by Wildcats freshmen since 1976...His 63 runs scored are tied for the most in the Pac-12, tied for ninth-most in the country, the most among all Division I freshmen in the nation, and the most scored by an Arizona freshman since Damon Mashore scored 64 in 1989...Wells' 47 RBI are tied for 10th most in the Pac-12, 13th most among all Division I freshmen in the country, and the most collected by a Wildcat freshman since Joey Rickard registered 51 in 2010...His .352 batting average is the ninth-best mark in the Pac-12, tied for the sixth-best mark among all Division I freshmen, and the best mark swatted by a Cats freshman since Nick Hundley hit .361 in 2003 (min. 100 AB)...Finally, his five triples are tied for second most in the Pac-12 and are tied for the second most legged out by an Arizona freshman since Brad Boyer hit eight triples in 2003 (also with five triples: Johnny Field, 2011; T.J. Steele, 2006)...With just three more RBI this season, Wells would become only the second Arizona freshman since 1976 to collected 50 runs scored and 50 RBI in a season (first: Keoni DeRenne, 1998: 68 runs, 55 RBI).

GO WITH THE FLOW: With his two-run home run on April 26 at No. 3 Stanford, Wildcats infielder
Nick Quintana became the first Arizona player in over a decade to swat 10+ home runs in back-to-back seasons...Quintana hit 14 homers for the Cats as a sophomore in 2018...The last players to accomplish this feat were C.J. Ziegler and Brad Glenn, who both pulled it off in the 2007 and 2008 seasons...Ziegler hit 13 HR in 2007 and 20 HR in 2008, while Glenn hit 10 HR in 2007 and 14 HR in 2008...Quintana's three-run home run on May against USC gave him 32 career home runs with the Wildcats, pushing him into a tie for seventh most in program history...Quintana has hit 20-of-32 career HR at home at Hi Corbett Field, while 23-of-32 HR have come off right-handed pitchers.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: Infielder
Cameron Cannon has smacked 27 doubles through 50 games this season...As of games played May 13, Cannon's 27 two-baggers are the most among all NCAA Division I baseball players...He is one of just 12 players nationally with over 20 doubles this season...Cannon alone has accounted for nearly 1/5th of the Wildcats nation-leading 138 doubles — without his contribution, Arizona would rank tied for 19th...Cannon has registered multiple doubles in a game five times this year, and has swatted at least one double in 20-of-50 games...He has surpassed his output in doubles from last year, as Cannon smacked a team-best 21 doubles in 56 games in 2018...The Arizona single-season record for doubles is 30, set by Dave Stegman in 1976 and tied by
JJ Matijevic in 2017...Cannon is currently on pace for 30 doubles through the remainder of the regular season...He is one double shy of breaking into the Top 10 of Arizona's career doubles leaderboard.

ON THE BOARD: The Wildcats have scored at least one run in 88 straight games, with their last shutout loss coming all the way back on March 17, 2018 at Washington...The Cats 88-game scoring streak is the longest active streak among Pac-12 teams (next: UCLA, 56 games)...Even more impressive is the club's ability to avoid being shut out at home, with the Cats last blanking at Hi Corbett coming on April 25, 2015 against Cal — they have registered 131 straight home games without being kept off the scoreboard...During that 131 game stretch the Wildcats have been held to just one run twice, while posting 5+ runs 94 times.
