TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats placed eight total student-athletes on the 2019 Pac-12 Softball All-Academic Teams, the league announced Thursday.
Arizona had three players –
Jessie Harper,
Gina Snyder and
Tamara Statman – earn first-team honors.
Malia Martinez was a second-team selection, while
Hanah Bowen,
Reyna Carranco,
Taylor McQuillin and
Dejah Mulipola were named honorable mention.
To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average, and appear in at least 50 percent of their team's games.
Statman, who received her degree in political science earlier this month, posted a 3.85 grade point average, which was tied for the third-best mark of any Pac-12 softball player. She was also a first-team selection in 2017 as a sophomore. Snyder, who also graduated this month with a degree in general studies, posted a 3.79 GPA. Harper, a junior, had a 3.63 GPA as a sociology major.
Martinez, a junior, earned a 3.53 GPA as a physiology major, landing her on the second team. Both Harper and Martinez were second-team selections last year as sophomores, while Carranco, McQuillin and Mulipola all earned honorable mention honors last year as well.
Statman played in 31 games for the Wildcats, posting a .333 batting average with four home runs and 13 RBI. Snyder was a standout in the circle, going 5-0 with a 1.95 ERA in 11 appearances, spanning 32 1/3 innings. Harper, a first-team All-Pac-12 selection, has started all 57 games for Arizona this year, and is hitting .353 with 28 home runs and 69 RBI. Her 28 home runs lead the country.
Martinez has also started all 57 games for Arizona, and is hitting .316 with 13 home runs and 54 RBI. Carranco won the Pac-12 batting title and enters this weekend with a .432 batting average with 13 doubles, five home runs and 39 RBI. McQuillin is 22-7 in the circle with a 1.54 ERA. She has 205 strikeouts on the season and is limiting opposing hitters to a .180 batting average. Mulipola started all 57 games and is hitting .320 with 21 home runs and 52 RBI. Bowen has pitched 29 innings this year and is 3-0 with a 0.48 ERA. She is also batting .281 in 32 at-bats.
The Wildcats return to action this weekend in the Super Regionals vs. 11
th-seeded Ole Miss. Game 1 of the series is set for Friday at 4 p.m., MST.
