Cats Camp: Pads Come On as Fall Camp Ramps Up

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona Wildcats returned to the practice fields Monday evening after enjoying the previous day off. Newly donning shoulder pads, the Cats were eager for the opportunity to get a little more physical as fall camp continues.

Once practice wrapped for the evening, redshirt senior receiver Cedric Peterson and junior defensive lineman JB Brown discussed a variety of topics with the local media. Peterson, the Wildcats leading returning wideout, talked about his role as a leader among the receiving corps and the development of quarterback Khalil Tate. Brown, a member of Arizona's D-line, described his transition to the interior of the line, the NFL player he is trying to model his game after, and playing his brothers in Madden as a child.

Highlights and more from Arizona's third fall practice session can be found below.

Quote of the Night

Defensive lineman JB Brown, on who he's looking to emulate on the field: "Aaron Donald. As soon as I got the move officially to the inside, I looked up the smallest defensive tackle in the NFL. He's 6-1, 285, so I'm going to watch his moves. You know what he does, 20-sack seasons, so I had a lot [of film] to watch. He's very aggressive, but his explosiveness out of his hips, he can kind of play with offensive linemen - he can come out of his stance slow and they'll sit and wait on him and then in one second he's gone, he's just so fast and explosive."

The Wildcats currently feature 18 wide receivers on the roster, giving quarterback Khalil Tate a plethora of options to target downfield during the 2019 season. Both the featured returner and feature newcomer (below) are among those 18 wideouts looking to haul in receptions and rack up the yardage over the next few months.

Featured Returner — RS Senior Cedric Peterson

Peterson, in his fifth year with the Cats, enters the 2019 season as Arizona's leading returning wideout. The 6-foot-1 receiver from Moreno Valley, Calif. averaged 14.89 yards per reception last year while seeing playing time in all 12 games. Peterson is also known for his stout blocking ability, which aided the Wildcats Pac-12-leading rushing attack each of the last three seasons. As a receiver, Peterson has had many opportunities to square off against the Cats defensive backs, and has been impressed by true freshman cornerback Christian Roland-Wallace, saying, "Really strong dude ... really good player who is going to help us out a lot this coming season."

Featured Newcomer — Freshman Jalen "Boobie" Curry

Curry, one of Arizona's incoming wide receivers, hauled in two varsity letters at St. Pius X High School in Houston during his prep career. Over two seasons — during which he was teammates with fellow incoming freshman QB Grant Gunnell — Curry picked up 1,946 yards and 21 touchdowns in just 17 games. During his breakout junior season, the 6-foot-2 wideout registered 1,576 yards and 18 touchdowns on 122 receptions, good for an average of 12.91 yards per catch and 131.2 yards per game. His 26 receptions in a win over Concordia Lutheran during his junior year set a Texas state record. Redshirt senior wide receiver Cedric Peterson had some praise for Curry and the other freshman receivers after Monday's practice.

"Out of the freshman wide receivers I really like Jalen Johnson and Boobie Curry," Peterson said. "They really came in with their heads on right, ready to compete and really prepared themselves to compete this upcoming season."
