TUCSON, Ariz. -- Three Wildcats, two current and one former, have been invited to the USA Softball's 2020 Women's Olympic Team Selection Trials, announced on Friday.
Dejah Mulipola and
Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza, who just completed their junior seasons at Arizona, as well as alum Chelsea Goodacre (2012-15) were three of the 30 players to receive invitations to USA Softball's first Olympic tryout in 12 years. The Selection Trials will take place October 1-6 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Arizona's three invitees are the third most in the country behind UCLA and Florida, who each had five players receive invites. The Pac-12 led all conferences with 14 invitees.
Mulipola, a current member of the U.S. Women's National Team, was named Johnny Bench and NFCA Catcher of the Year as a junior in 2019. The three-year starter at Arizona has hit 47 home runs in her Wildcat career, including a career-most 23 last season, which ranked fourth in the NCAA.
Palomino-Cardoza, who was the 2016 USA Softball Junior Female Athlete of the Year while competing for the U.S. Junior Women's National Team, has been named a first-team All-American each of the last two seasons, UA's first player to earn back-to-back first-team All-America honors in eight years.Â
Goodacre, who last competed for USA Softball in 2011 as a member of the U.S. Junior Women's National Team, was an All-American catcher at Arizona from 2012-15. Goodacre led the NCAA in RBI (86) as a senior in 2015 and currently sits eighth in Arizona history with 240 career RBI. Goodacre has played the last four seasons with the defending champion USSSA Pride in the NPF and earned the Gold Glove as the top defensive player in the league in 2017.Â
The three Wildcats will vie for the 15 spots on the Olympic roster. They will look to join Jennie Finch (2004, 2008), Lovie Jung (2004),
Caitlin Lowe (2008) and Leah O'Brien (1996, 2004) as Wildcats to compete for USA Softball in the Olympic games. UA head coach
Mike Candrea was the USA Softball head coach for both the 2004 (gold medal) and 2008 (silver medal) Olympics.
