TUCSON, Ariz.--The Arizona Wildcats will be heading to Albuquerque for the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate this weekend. The Cats will tee off on Friday, September 27th and play through Saturday, the 28th. The University of New Mexico Lobos will be hosting the tournament, which will take place at the UNM Championship Course.
The lineup for the Wildcats this event includes junior Trevor Werbylo, seniors David Laskin, Briggs Duce and Brad Reeves, along with freshman Chase Sienkiewicz. Drake Mendenhall, Santeri Lehesmaa and Hayden Sayre will play as individuals.
In their last appearance at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, Reeves and Werbylo both tied for 27th place. The team placed third at the event. In the first tournament of this season, the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, Briggs Duce and David Laskin both tied for 8th place and held scores of -8 over 54 holes. Arizona newcomer Chase Sienkiewicz brings an impressive resume to the squad, including winner of the 2018 AGC Christmas Classic, and second-place finisher at the IMG Academy Junior World Championship.
"The Tucker is a historic event and our program has enjoyed success at The Championship Course at UNM (1992 NCAA Champions). We expect Albuquerque to present a great challenge for our team this week," said head coach Jim Anderson. "The greens will be very fast and typically, accuracy will be at a premium with the rough up on the championship set up. Our guys are very confident and if we stay patient while taking advantage of the Par 5's, we will be in a position to have a great week."
Freshman Aidric Chan, who had a brilliant debut at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, is competing at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Shanghai and will miss the Tucker Intercollegiate.
The Wildcats will be playing in a competitive field of 14 other teams: New Mexico, UNLV, BYU, San Diego State, Utah, Kansas, Colorado, Coastal Carolina, Wyoming, North Texas, Florida Atlantic, UTEP, New Mexico State and Loyola Marymount.
"Our upperclassmen have all played the course and this event specifically, so we feel good about their experience," said Anderson. "Briggs and David play well within themselves and Trevor and Brad have length that will compound as a huge advantage at elevation. Our freshman, Chase, is playing with great poise and his skill set off the tee will be a huge asset too."
