Arizona Splits on Day 2

TUCSON, Ariz. -- No. 4 Arizona went 1-1 in Saturday's split doubleheader, defeating Bryant, 3-1, before falling to second-ranked Oklahoma in 10 innings, 6-4.

The Wildcats (8-1) will finish up the Hillenbrand Invitational vs. Long Beach State on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. MST.

Game 1: #4 Arizona 3, Bryant 1

Senior pitcher Mariah Lopez struck out a career-high-tying 13 batters in yet another gem, retiring 16 of the final 17 batters she faced in the complete-game effort, leading Arizona to a 3-1 win over Bryant in UA's first game of the day on Saturday.

Lopez did not walk a batter in seven innings of work, giving up just one run on three hits.

The Wildcat offense was quiet once again, plating just three runs, all of which occurred in the bottom of the first inning, on 10 hits. UA stranded nine runners on base in the game.

Eight different Wildcats had hits in the game, including multi-hit efforts from Sharlize Palacios and Jenna Kean. For Palacios, the hits were the first two of her career in her second career start. She missed the first six games of her freshman year with a broken thumb.

Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza homered again for Arizona, her fifth of the season and 59th of her career. She's one shy of becoming the ninth player in Arizona history to reach 60 career home runs.

Reyna Carranco

Arizona plated three runs in its first three batters of the game. Isabella Dayton walked and stole second to lead off the game. Reyna Carranco singled her home before Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza blasted a two-run homer to put the Cats on top, 3-0 after 1.

In the second, Bryant used an infield single and two-out double to score its first run of the game.

Both pitchers held serve from the second inning on.

Game 2: #2 Oklahoma 6, #4 Arizona 4 (10 innings)

The top-five showdown between second-ranked Oklahoma and fourth-ranked Arizona lived up to its billing, needing 10 innings and just shy of three hours to settle. Oklahoma edged Arizona, 6-4, with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the 10th inning.

Arizona wasted a pair of golden opportunities in the game, squandering a bases-loaded, no-one out situation in the bottom of the eighth after giving up a 4-3 lead entering the seventh inning.

In all, Arizona left 13 runners on base, its most since Feb. 10, 2018 vs. UC Davis.

The game occurred in front of a sold out crowd of 3,006 fans at Hillenbrand Stadium, the fourth highest figure in school history, and the first time UA has hit 3,000 fans since 2004.

The game was a pitchers' duel early between Arizona's Alyssa Denham and Oklahoma's Macy McAdoo, with the two trading zeros on the scoreboard for the first three innings.

After Oklahoma opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, Jessie Harper hit an opposite-field home run to tie the game in the bottom half.

OU plated another run in the top of the fifth, but the Cats answered with three runs in the bottom half.

Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza tied the game with an RBI single followed by a go-ahead two-run single from Reyna Carranco that put the Wildcats up 4-2.

A solo homer cut Arizona's lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth.

In the seventh, OU opened the inning with a single and a double to put the tying run at third and go-ahead run at second with nobody out. The double chased Denham in favor of Mariah Lopez, who entered to face her former team in a nearly impossible situation. After a fielder's choice tied the game and put the go-ahead runner at third with nobody out, Lopez induced a double play and got a pop up to keep the game tied.

After Arizona was unable to walk off in the bottom of the seventh, the teams went to the eighth inning with the international tie breaker in effect.

Lopez stranded Oklahoma's free runner at second base with two strikeouts and a pop out in the eighth.

In the home half, an intentional walk  and a bunt single loaded the bases for Arizona with nobody out. The Cats couldn't take advantage, though, as OU cut down the lead runner at the plate on a ground ball and then turned a double play on a sharp line drive.

Both pitchers held serve in the ninth, sending the game to a 10th inning, marking UA's first 10-inning game since March 30, 2014 vs. Arizona State.

Oklahoma loaded the bases with a single and an intentional walk in the top of the 10th. After Lopez recorded a strikeout, Grace Green hit a fly ball to left field. The ball was dropped, allowing two Oklahoma runs to score.

Arizona could not respond in the home half.

The Wildcats dropped to 8-1 with the loss while Oklahoma improved to 7-1 on the season.

Mariah Lopez took the tough-luck loss, allowing just two unearned runs on one hit with five strikeouts  and one walk in 4.0 innings of relief. It was her first loss this season (6-1) and just her third of her career (57-3); Lopez entered the week on track to set the NCAA record for career winning percentage. Lopez relieved starter Alyssa Denham, who gave up four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
