02/20/2020 | Men's Golf
LIHUE, Hawaii – The Arizona Wildcats completed their opening round at the John Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course at +5 on Thursday. Arizona currently sits in a tie for eighth place after the opening 18 holes.
As a team, Arizona shot 293. The Wildcats are six shots off the lead. University of North Carolina-Wilmington and BYU are leading at one-under par.
The Wildcats were led by junior Trevor Werbylo, who fired an opening round 70 to get to two-under par. Werbylo started his round on the seventh hole and bogeyed. He then strung together four straight birdies to get into the red and shot 34-36 to open the tournament. The junior from Tucson is just one shot off the lead. BYU's Peter Kuest, UNCW's A. Segundo Oliva Pinto and Texas A&M's Sam Bennett and Josh Gilege are all -3.
Senior Briggs Duce also shot an under-par round to start Arizona's second spring tournament of the season. Duce finished with a 71, shooting one-under. He opened his round with three straight birdies and briefly led the tournament after a birdie on his 12th hole. Duce finished the day tied for 10th.
"We had a better day than our score indicated," Coach Jim Anderson said. "Our guys were ready to play and we had it under par through much of the round. We made a few mistakes to finish the round, but I know we will correct them tomorrow. This group is composed and we know there is a lot of golf to play. Briggs and Trevor were very consistent today. I think both of them will make a few adjustments and we are very confident everyone will be ready for a good day tomorrow."
Senior David Laskin labored on the back nine, but shot a 75 to finish the opening round at +3 and tied for 60th. Freshman Chase Sienkiewicz shot a 77 and is tied for 90th at five-over par. Senior Brad Reeves shot a 78 and is tied for 109th.
Freshman Aidric Chan, playing as an individual, shot a 76 and is tied for 77th. Chan recovered from an opening triple bogey to shoot one-over for the remainder of his round.
Round two will begin Friday at 11 a.m., MST with a shotgun start.
