LIHUE, Hawaii – The Arizona Wildcats golf team improved its score by seven shots Friday in the second round of play at the John Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Club and sit in sixth place with 18 holes to play Saturday.
Arizona shot a 286 as a team, one day after firing a 293 in the opening round. The Wildcats are now +3 as a team, 10 shots behind the leader, Texas A&M. Out of the 21-team field, only seven teams shot under par in the second round with Arizona being one of the seven.
Senior Brad Reeves and freshman Chase Sienkiewicz each shot under-par rounds Friday in the second round. Reeves led the way with a two-under 70. Sienkiewicz shot a 71. Both players are +4 for the tournament and tied for 51st.
Senior Briggs Duce and junior Trevor Werbylo are both tied for 12th overall after the first two rounds at -1. Duce shot an even par 72 on Friday, while Werbylo finished with a 73. Playing as an individual, freshman Aidric Chan shot a two-over 74. Senior David Laskin also shot a 74 in the second round and is +5 for the tournament and tied for 68th. Chan is +6 for the tournament.
Reeves opened his round with a birdie and then eagled his fifth hole to move to three-under through five holes. After five straight pars, Reeves birdied 11th hole to get to four-under. The senior had three bogeys over a five-hole stretch, but birdied his final hole to shoot 70.
Duce was three-over with three holes to play in his round Friday, but birdied his final three holes to get back to even par and stay at -1 for the tournament. He had five birdies in his round.
Arizona will finish the John Burns Intercollegiate Saturday with another 8 a.m., shotgun start.
