SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Arizona Wildcats men's golf program will continue its early-season busy stretch Monday when it opens play at the Lamkin San Diego Classic at San Diego Country Club.
The Wildcats fought to a sixth place finish last year in San Diego with then sophomore
Trevor Werbylo finishing tied for fourth at three-under. This year, Arizona has finished sixth place or better in every tournament its played in, including a fourth place finish at its most recent tournament, the Cabo Collegiate.
"San Diego Country Club is one of our favorite stops of the spring," Coach
Jim Anderson said. "The golf course is so fun and the local support for the Wildcats is as good as any trip. San Diego is filled with Arizona alums and fans, and we get support every year. We anticipate the greens to be very fast and we are familiar with their traditional hole locations. There are a few holes where making par is a great score and there are also several where you have scoring chances with wedges, too. Our team is playing with a lot of confidence and we believe playing with patience will be key."
Arizona's lineup for the tournament includes seniors
David Laskin,
Briggs Duce and
Brad Reeves, along with Werbylo and freshman
Aidric Chan. Junior
Drake Mendenhall and freshmen
Hayden Sayre and
Chase Sienkiewicz will travel to San Diego as well to participate in the 2020 Coronado Individual.
Arizona enters the tournament ranked No. 11 in the most recent Golfstat National Rankings. The Wildcats will tee off in a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m., on Monday and play 36 holes of golf on the opening day. The final round will begin at 8:30 a.m., on Sunday.
Werbylo, Laskin, Duce and Reeves have played in all seven tournaments for the Wildcats this season and have been constants in the lineup. Werbylo is leading the pack with a scoring average of 69.67. He has finished in the Top 10 in five of seven events and has placed in the Top 20 in six events. He has 16 rounds of par or better.
