Building the A with Brenden Schooler

For the large majority of his life, Brenden Schooler's happy place has been on the beaches of Dana Point, California.

The wide receiver, who transferred to Arizona from Oregon for his final season of college football, has been surfing since he was 5 years old. The peace and clarity that come with being in the ocean and in the sand is something he's valued for a long time.

"Surfing, it's a very humbling thing to do," Schooler said. "It clears your mind. The only thing you're worried about is where the next wave is going to come from."

In doing so, he gets to reunite with his younger brother, Colin – a name all Arizona Football fans are already familiar with.

Schooler was expected to complete his collegiate career in 2019, but a fracture in his foot prevented that from happening. Instead, he took a medical redshirt season.

There were – no doubt – a couple trips to the beaches in his home town of Dana Point to figure out his next move. After some time in the water, Brenden decided he wanted to join the Wildcats for his next wave.

"As soon as I decided to transfer, Arizona was at the top of the list," Brenden said. "Not just because of Colin, but I knew Grant (Gunnell) could sling the ball and all the other things that Colin has told me about Arizona. The opportunity to play there for Coach Sumlin and play with Colin and live with him; I just couldn't pass it up."

Brenden had a pretty good idea as soon as he decided to transfer that Arizona was going to be his next destination. But he felt it was important to do his due diligence, and make sure Tucson was in fact the right place for him.

"I think he and I both kind of knew that I was going to come to Arizona the entire time, but I just wanted to make sure that I was giving every situation the time of day," Brenden said. "At the end of the day, I was set on Arizona and I was obviously very excited, as was Colin."

It will surely be a welcome change for Brenden to be back on the same side as his brother, rather than the opposite sideline.

Truth be told, Brenden didn't really enjoy competing against his brother all that much, and is happy to have him on his side again.

"It was weird playing against him the very first time," Brenden said. "I had a lot of different emotions. I played with Colin my entire life. We were always on the same page. It was us versus everyone else. That was the first time in our athletic careers, that we were going against each other. I wanted to win, but I also quietly wanted him to do well. After the game, I was just so proud of the way he played."

Brenden arrived in Tucson in time for the spring semester and had planned on participating in spring practices with the Wildcats. Instead, after the first week, the rest of the spring was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Still, the week was valuable and taught Brenden a lot about his new team, while also giving him some time to be on the same squad as his brother again.

"I thought the first week went really well," Brenden said. "Now, I just can't wait to get back there and get back to work with my teammates."
