TUCSON, Ariz. — A pair of Arizona Wildcats first-year standouts, right-handed pitcher
Chandler Murphy and outfielder
Mac Bingham, were both selected to the
Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America roster on Tuesday morning.
Murphy and Bingham's selections give the Wildcats three All-Americans following the 2020 season, and two consecutive years with multiple Freshman All-America honorees. Catcher
Austin Wells was named a Second Team All-American by
Collegiate Baseball last week.
Murphy posted a perfect 2-0 record to go along with his team-leading 2.70 ERA in the Wildcats shortened season. He struck out 19 batters across 16.2 innings and limited opposing hitters to a .203 batting average, the 11th-best mark in the Pac-12 Conference. Murphy opened his first collegiate season with 10.2 innings of scoreless work, making him the first Arizona true freshman to accomplish the feat during the StatCrew era (1998-present).
Prior to arriving in Tucson, Murphy logged a sparkling 19-7 record and 2.06 ERA across four varsity seasons at Liberty High School in Peoria, Arizona and was selected by the Houston Astros in the 36th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft.
Bingham appeared in all 15 games with the Wildcats in 2020, hitting .361 (13-for-36) with six runs scored, two doubles, one home run, and seven RBI. During his first taste of college baseball, he drew more walks (9) than strikeouts (5) on the way to posting a blistering on-base percentage of .478. Bingham tallied four multi-hit performances and ranked third on the team in batting average across his 12 starts in left field.
The Chicago Cubs selected Bingham in the 40th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft following his standout prep career at Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, however he decided to continue his education and development with the Wildcats.
Arizona is the only Pac-12 program — and one of only 20 schools nationally — with multiple players selected to the
Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American team.
