Cats in the Pros: Jared Oliva Earns MLB Debut with Pirates

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona Baseball alum Jared Oliva earned his first Major League call-up on Monday when his contract was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He made his MLB debut later that night against the Chicago Cubs.

Oliva is the 84th Wildcat in Major League Baseball history, and the second to make his debut in 2020, following his former teammate Bobby Dalbec who made his debut with the Boston Red Sox in August. His call-up and debut completes a journey just over three years in the making following his selection by the Pirates in the seventh round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

With the debut of Oliva, three members of the Wildcat 2016 squad that made a run to the College World Series finals have now made it to the Major Leagues.

Oliva made his debut in the bottom of the ninth inning as he pinch hit for Colin Moran.

Across three seasons with the Wildcats, Oliva logged time in 173 games and posted a career .280 batting average with 105 runs scored, 38 doubles, 12 triples, nine home runs, and 110 RBI. He was a key member of the Wildcats 2016 College World Series team, playing in 71 games with 58 starts and posting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. He earned a spot on the 2016 CWS All-Tournament Team after hitting .269 and starting in all eight games in Omaha.
