Alyssa Denham No-Hits Stanford in Series Opener

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Alyssa Denham threw her third-career no-hitter, facing just two over the minimum in a near-perfect outing, as No. 9 Arizona opened the series with a 9-0, five-inning victory on Thursday evening in Palo Alto.

Not one batter earned its way on base vs. Denham, who did not walk or hit a batter in the no-no. The two Cardinal base runners came via a pair of rare Wildcat defensive errors. Denham induced 11 ground balls in the 17 batters she faced and did not allow a single hard hit ball on the night. The senior improved to 10-4 on the season with the win.

Offensively, the Wildcats were led by a huge night from senior third baseman Malia Martinez, who -- in her two at-bats -- hit a grand slam and a three-run home run. With two swings of the bat, Martinez accounted for seven of UA's nine runs in the game. Allie Skaggs (RBI walk) and Isabella Dayton (sac fly) accounted for the other two RBI in the game.

In total, the Cats scored nine runs on nine hits over five innings of offense. Arizona has now scored at least seven runs in each of its last five games, all vs. Pac-12 opponents.

Arizona improved to 19-5 (4-2 Pac-12) with the win and snapped Stanford's (22-5, 3-1 Pac-12) 10-game winning streak. The teams meet in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m. MST.

Game Notes
  • Alyssa Denham's no-hitter was the third of her career and 95th all-time in Arizona history. It also marks Denham's third straight season with a no-hitter after posting her first in 2019 and her second in 2020. She is the first Wildcat with three-or-more no-hitters in her career since Kenzie Fowler (4).
  • Denham's no-hitter was the second of the season for the Wildcats, marking the first time since 2017 that UA has had multiple no-hitters in a single season.
  • Malia Martinez's two home runs mark already the seventh time this season that an Arizona player has had multiple home runs in a single game.
  • Martinez's seven RBI are the most of her career and the most by a Wildcat this season.
  • Martinez's first-inning grand slam was Arizona's seventh grand slam of the season (in just 24 games). In last year's shortened season (25 games), Arizona did not hit a grand slam. In the last three seasons combined (2018-2020), Arizona hit seven total grand slams.
  • Janelle Meoño extended her hitting streak to a career-long 10 games with a first-inning single. That's now the longest hitting streak by any Wildcat this season. The Pac-12 batting leader went 1-for-3 on the night.
  • Dejah Mulipola drew two walks, improving her Pac-12-leading total to 21 and improved her Pac-12-leading on-base percentage to .593. She has reached base in now 26 straight games, the sixth-longest reached base streak since 2003 (when individual game-by-game statistics are available).
