TUCSON, Ariz. – In Track & Field News' December article, 11 Arizona freshmen were ranked in their list of 2023 Top Newcomers.
 
"This may be the best incoming class in UA history," said Head Coach Fred Harvey. "We have two #1 ranked athletes, two #2 ranked athletes, nine top ten, and 14 top 25 athletes in this 2022-23 class. The coaches did a remarkable job showing the Track & Field world our family here in Wildcat Country."
 
For the Arizona women, the list was highlighted by Tapenisa Havea being ranked the #1 incoming shot putter and #2 incoming discus thrower. Additionally, for the 400m hurdles, Antonia Sanchez Nunez was ranked second for incoming hurdlers. Emma Gates also had a top ten ranking as the fifth best incoming high jumper. Moreover, Taylen Wise was ranked eighth in the 300m hurdles and 12th in the triple jump as well. Avery Segura was also on the triple jump list as the #20 incoming triple jumper. Furthermore, Olayinka Olajide was ranked the #11 incoming 100m sprinter and Mia Chavez found herself on the list twice in the 800m (#21) and mile (#24).
 
Kristjan Sigfinnsson was the spotlight for the Arizona men, with Track & Field News ranking him as the best incoming high jumper. Rayshon Luke was also on the list as the eighth ranked incoming 100m sprinter. Additionally, Lyricc Lopez was on the list in two events: the 300m hurdles (#5) and the 400m (#10).
 
This talented group of freshmen and the rest of the track and field squad will start the season in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Jan. 20, for the indoor season opener: the Lumberjack Team Challenge.
