Arizona Falls in Opener at California, 9-8

BERKELEY, Calif. — The Arizona Wildcats (10-4) suffered a 9-8 loss to the California Golden Bears (7-6) to open Pac-12 conference play on Friday night.

The bottom four players in Arizona's starting lineup delivered in a big way for the Wildcats, combining to go 8-for-18 with four runs scored, one double, and six RBI. Center fielder Mac Bingham led the charge, going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, marking his first three-hit performance of the year.

Starting pitcher TJ Nichols was effective for the Cats, going 5.1 innings and striking out six on 108 pitches. The sophomore right-hander allowed four runs on five hits and did not factor into the decision.

Fellow right-hander Trevor Long was dominant in two innings of relief, holding the Golden Bears without a hit and picking up six outs on just 19 pitches.

California scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to steal the victory. Arizona will look to even the series on Saturday afternoon.
