BERKELEY, Calif. — A historic performance from catcher
Daniel Susac and a combined 17 hits propelled the Arizona Wildcats (12-4, 2-1) to a decisive 13-5 victory in the rubber match against the California Golden Bears (7-8, 1-2) on Sunday afternoon.
Susac and the Wildcats jumped all over the Golden Bears in the first inning, scoring nine runs before California even had a chance at the plate. Shortstop
Nik McClaughry was hit by a pitch to open the game before Susac drove them both in on a home run to left field.
Designated hitter
Noah Turley and second baseman
Tyler Casagrande both picked up RBI with two outs to continue the rally. Following a Cal fielding error that extended the inning, Susac again sent a ball flying over the fence in left for his second home run of the frame. In total, Arizona's All-American catcher drove in five RBI in the game's opening frame.
Cal would go on to out-score the Wildcats 5-4 over the remainder of the game, but never seriously challenged Arizona's lead.
Starting pitcher
Dawson Netz logged his first quality start of the season, going 6.0 innings and holding the Golden Bears to just three runs on six hits. He earned the win and improved to 2-0 on the year.
