TUCSON, Ariz. — Second baseman
Garen Caulfield delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth to send the Arizona Wildcats (23-10) to a 4-2 victory over the New Mexico State Aggies (12-18) on Tuesday night at Hi Corbett Field.
Caulfield's two-run single broke up a 2-2 tie in the eighth and gave the Wildcats the final edge in a quick midweek tilt.
Right-handed reliever
Trevor Long set up Caulfield's heroics with some of his own. Entering the game in the top of the eighth, Long inherited the go-ahead run at third base with no outs. The Aggies proceed to load the bases, but Long responded with back-to-back strikeouts to neutralize the threat and keep the game locked at 2-2.
Starting pitcher
Dawson Netz worked two innings in his return to the mound. He held NMSU scoreless on just one hit while striking out three, but did not factor into the decision.Â
