RUNNING WILD: Arizona has scored at least one run in 205 straight games — they have not suffered a shutout loss since falling 1-0 at Washington on March 17, 2018. The Wildcats 205-game scoring streak is the longest active streak in the Pac-12 and 84 more games than the next closest team, Oregon (121 games). It is also the longest active streak among all Power Five programs, and the third-longest streak in program history. Over the course of their 205-game scoring stretch, Arizona has been held to three runs or fewer just 34 times. On the flip side, during the streak they have scored five or more runs 118 times. Arizona, Oregon, and West Virginia are the only programs in the Power Five with scoring streaks longer than 100 games.
STREAKONOMICS: Outfielder
Mac Bingham has reached base safely in 20 consecutive games, the longest active streak on the team and the longest streak of his career. Over those 20 games, Bingham has hit .341 with a .396 on-base percentage, raising his season batting average from .196 to .289. He has seven multi-hit performances during the streak. Infielder
Nik McClaughry (13 games) and outfielder
Tanner O'Tremba (9 games) also both currently spot extended on-base streaks. McClaughry has hit safely in four straight games, the longest active hit streak on the roster.
MLB OPENING DAY '22: Five former Wildcats earned a spot on Opening Day rosters aross Major League Baseball. Infielder Bobby Dalbec (Boston Red Sox), right-handed pitcher
Tylor Megill (New York Mets), right-handed pitcher Mark Melancon (Arizona Diamondbacks), infielder Kevin Newman (Pittsburgh Pirates), and infielder Alfonso Rivas (Chicago Cubs) all opened the 2022 season this week. Additionally, three former Arizona players are currently serving as Major League coaches: Terry Francona (Manager, Cleveland Guardians), Kevin Long (Hitting Coach, Philadelphia Phillies), and Shelley Duncan (Analytics Coordinator, Chicago White Sox). Finally, 25 Wildcats began their Minor League seasons this week; a complete list can be found on page five of these notes.
BULLPEN BULLIES: A pair of right-handed relievers have been crucial to the Wildcats success this season:
Trevor Long and
Quinn Flanagan. The dynamic duo of righties have made 28 appearances this year and together posted a combined ERA of 1.37 (7ERx46.0IP). Both Flanagan (.232) and Long (.191) have limited opposing hitters to a paltry batting average. They have excelled in Pac-12 conference play as well, with their ERA in those games sitting at 2.08 (5ERx21.2IP). The pair has held opponents without an earned run in 24-of-28 outings this season. Flanagan in particular has excelled at racking up strikeouts, posting a 9.8 K/9 rate just over halfway through the regular season campaign.
POLL POSITION: The Wildcats remain ranked in the Top 25 by every major national outlet, led by a No. 12 ranking from Collegiate Baseball. Arizona is also ranked No. 14 from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, No. 16 from Baseball America and the USA Today Coaches Poll, and No. 20 from D1Baseball. Arizona opened the season ranked in every poll, marking the sixth consecutive year they earned a preseason ranking from Collegiate Baseball and the ninth time they were selected to the USA Today Coaches Poll (since 2004). The only other Pac-12 programs currently ranked in the D1Baseball poll are No. 5 Oregon State and No. 15 UCLA.
EXTRA EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT: Through 33 games, the Arizona offense has combined to swat an astounding 117 extra-base hits, the third-best mark in the Pac-12. The Wildcats are currently averaging 3.5 extra-base hits per game, with catcher
Daniel Susac (22) and outfielders
Tanner O'Tremba (17) and
Chase Davis (16) leading the way. Arizona has taken advantage of the large dimensions at Hi Corbett Field since moving there in 2012 — in the decade-plus since the move the Wildcats lead the Pac-12 with 1,778 extra-base hits (second: Stanford, 1,613). During that stretch Arizona has paced the conference in doubles six times and triples five times.
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: Arizona has dominated the 7th and 8th innings this season, out-scoring their opponents 80-39 and hitting .353 (100x283) with 25 extra-base hits across those frames. Five different players have logged more than 10 at-bats in the 7th inning this year and are hitting .300 or better, led by infielder
Jack Grant at .500 (5x10). Five players have also accomplished this feat in the 8th inning, led by outfielder
Tanner O'Tremba and his .643 (9x14) AVG. Pitching has been strongest for the Wildcats in the 7th, where they have posted a 3.00 ERA and struck out 32 batters in 33.0 IP.
