LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A gem from
Garrett Irvin and a go-ahead double from
Daniel Susac helped push the Arizona Wildcats (33-16, 14-9) to a 3-2 game two victory over the USC Trojans (23-21, 7-16) on Saturday afternoon.
Irvin was brilliant for Arizona, limiting USC to just one run on four singles in 6.2 innings of work. Irvin issued just one walk and struck out a season-high seven batters but did not factor into the decision.
The Wildcats entered the eighth inning even with the Trojans at 1-1, with their only run to that point coming on a third-inning solo home run from
Blake Paugh.
Nik McClaughry and
Tanner O'Tremba drew back-to-back walks to open the eighth, forcing a pitching change. Susac greeted USC's reliever with a two-run double to center field that put Arizona in front 3-1.
The Trojans picked up one run in the bottom of the ninth but closer
Trevor Long induced a groundout to third to end the threat and seal the win. He earned his fifth save of the season.
