Â
ABOUT LAST GAME: Michael Penix Jr. threw for 363 yards; Dillon Johnson ran for two touchdowns as Arizona falls 31-24 to No. 7 Washington Saturday night (9/30). The Huskies (5-0, 2-0 Pac-12) arrived in the desert with more big plays than any other team in the country. With the Wildcats taking away the deep ball, Penix turned to underneath throws, giving his receivers opportunities to make plays after the catch. They did, following downfield blocking and breaking tackles to turn short throws into chunk plays. Washington's run game provided the finishing touches, scoring all four of the Huskies' touchdowns. Penix completed 30 of 40 passes in Washington's 12th straight win over two seasons. Coming off a one-point win at Stanford, the Wildcats (3-2, 1-1) had few answers for Washington's offense and didn't do enough when they had the ball to pull off the upset.
Noah Fifita threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns with an interception in his first career start. He hit
Tetairoa McMillan on a 10-yard touchdown pass to pull Arizona to 31-24 with 1:11 left, but Washington recovered the onside kick. Washington was in a similar position a year ago, 4-0 and in the College Football Playoff conversation. The Huskies stumbled in their first road game with a loss to UCLA and lost again to Arizona State. Washington's offense did its part to avoid a repeat. Penix put the Huskies in position, picking apart the Wildcats with short throws to the sidelines. Washington's run game finished off the drives. Johnson ran in a 4-yard touchdown on the Huskies' opening drive, receiver Germie Bernard scored on 3-yard run and Will Nixon added an 8-yard TD run. Arizona's offense got off to a sluggish start without quarterback
Jayden de Laura and running back
Michael Wiley, both injured last week. Fifita found a rhythm in the second quarter, orchestrating a 12-play, 75-yard drive capped by an 8-yard touchdown pass to
Jacob Cowing.
Tyler Loop's 30-yard field goal kept the Wildcats within 21-10 at halftime. Washington stuck to the same script to start the second half. Penix hit Josh Cuevas on a 57-yard pass and Devin Culp made a spectacular 18-yard catch with a defender draped on him, putting the Huskies in scoring position. Johnson finished it off, scoring on 4-yard run to put Washington up 28-10. Fifita hit McMillan on an 8-yard touchdown pass to pull Arizona to 28-17, but threw an ill-advised interception on a flip pass while in the grasp of a defender.
WILDCATS TRAVEL TO LA TO FACE USC: Arizona (3-2, 1-1 Pac-12) hits the road to Los Angeles to face USC (5-0, 3-0 Pac-12). The Wildcats trail the all-time series 8-37 and are looking to secure their first win over the Trojans since Oct. 27, 2012. The current 10-game losing streak is the longest in the series and the longest streak against any foe on the schedule this year. Arizona's last win over USC was a 39-36 victory on Oct. 27, 2012, in Tucson. The Wildcats are 4-20 in Los Angeles and the last win over USC on the road was a 21-17 victory on Dec. 5, 2009. The Wildcats have won just two games in the last 22 years (22 matchups) against the Trojans (2-20 record). Arizona won back-to-back games against USC in 1999-2000 marking the longest win streak for the Wildcats in the matchup. Â The Wildcats dropped the most recent matchup in 2022 with the Trojans 45-37 at Arizona Stadium. In that game QB
Jayden de Laura went off for 380 passing-yards and three passing touchdowns on 26-of-43 attempts. De Laura also rushed for 54 yards to lead the Wildcats in passing and rushing. With a 34-yard scramble in the third quarter, de Laura set a career-high for longest rush, which he surpassed with a 53-yard rushing touchdown in the 2023 season-opening win against Northern Arizona.
FIRST START: Redshirt Freshman QB

He set career-high marks in attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns, rush attempts, and rush yards. Cowing has 3,921 (1,326 at Arizona) yards in his career (leads active players). Since 1956, only 21 players have recorded 4,000-plus receiving yards in their career. His 24 receiving touchdowns are tied for second among active players, with Tory Horton (Colorado State), Xavier Worthy (Texas), and trailing Zakhari Franklin (37, Ole Miss). SECURING THE FUTURE: Following the 2022 season, the University of Arizona and head football coach
Jedd Fisch agreed to a contract extension through the 2027 season. Fisch has elevated the football program in two seasons, which included a four-win improvement in his second year as head coach. The four-win improvement in Fisch's second year tied for the second-largest win increase in a single season in program history. The 2022 season saw the Wildcats defeat No. 9 UCLA at the Rose Bowl, which was Arizona's first top-10 win on the road since 2015. The team went on to defeat Arizona State in the Territorial Cup two weeks later, snapping its in-state rival's five-game winning streak. The successful start to his tenure has been highlighted by historical recruiting success. Arizona signed its highest rated recruiting class ever in 2022 that ranked at the top of the Pac-12 and in the top 25 nationally. The program's elite recruiting was bolstered by the addition of key transfers in the portal. Player development has also been a staple of the program with a litany of offensive players rewriting the record book this season.
TIGHT END U: Tanner McLachlan continues to climb up the tight end record books at Arizona. He made 34 receptions for 456 yards and two touchdown grabs a season ago. McLachlan's 456 receiving yards are the third-most in a single season (StatsPass era, since 1996) for an Arizona tight end. His 34 receptions in 2022 are second-most in a single season for Arizona and most since Rob Gronkowski caught 47 during the 2008 season. McLachlan made a 36-yard touchdown grab at Stanford (9/23), marking the longest touchdown reception of his career. He made six receptions for 51 yards against No. 7 Washington (9/23) to bring his total at Arizona to 670. McLachlan is second since 1996 in receiving yards among tight ends at Arizona, trailing Rob Gronkowski's 1,197.Â
HISTORICAL BLOCK: The Wildcats blocked a field goal and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter against NAU, their first in 21 years (last: Gary Love, 2002, vs. North Texas, 60 yards). Davis and Love's returns are the only blocked field goals returned for touchdowns since 1996 for the Wildcats. The kick was blocked by
Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei and returned by
Tacario Davis. Davis' 85-yard return was the longest blocked field goal returned for a touchdown in the Pac-12 since at least 1996 (next longest: 83 yards, Dennis Weathersby, 2002, for Oregon State vs. UCLA).
WILDCATS IN THE NFL: The Wildcats are once again well represented in the National Football League this year with seven former letterwinners across the league. One of Arizona's most prestigious alumnus, tight end Rob Gronkowski, retired following the 2021 season after winning the fourth Super Bowl of his career. Gronk was a five-time Pro Bowl selection, a four-time First Team All-Pro selection, and was selected to the NFL's 2010s All-Decade Team and NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. Over 11 seasons with New England and Tampa Bay, Gronkowski recorded 9,286 yards (5th all time) and 92 touchdowns (3rd all time). The most recent Wildcats to make the transition to the NFL are defensive lineman
Jalen Harris (Chicago Bears) and linebacker
Christian Young (Seattle Seahawks). For a complete list of former Wildcats in the NFL, see the comprehensive chart below. *Practice squad
