LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Wildcats defeated UC Santa Barbara 4-1 on Saturday, Feb. 18 after falling 4-0 to Texas Tech that morning and losing 4-2 to Kansas on Friday, Feb. 17. They are now 9-3 after their weekend in the Midwest. 

Kansas
Parker Fry and Salma Ziouti fell 6-4 to H. Janse Van Vuuren and Malika Ngounoue at one doubles followed by Kayla Wilkins and Reece Carter who also lost 4-6 to Joceyln Massey and Carmen Roxana Manu at three doubles. 

It was a quick singles competition with every match ending in straight sets. Freshman Carter, playing at three singles for the first time this spring, defeated Manu 6-3, 6-2 to tie up the overall score. Then Fry put Arizona one point ahead with her 6-1, 6-3 win over Massey at six singles. 

Maria Titova, a Jayhawk sophomore from Russia, bested Ziouti 6-2, 6-4 at two singles to tie the overall match score once again. Kansas was back in the lead after Castillo fell 5-7, 1-6 to #46 in the country Ngounoue at one singles. Janse Van Vuuren clinched the match for KU after defeating freshman Tanvi Narendran 6-4, 6-4 at four singles. 

Texas Tech
Arizona was unsuccessful in securing the afternoon's doubles point against the Texas Tech Raiders. At one singles, Parker Fry and Salma Ziouti only won one game against #50 Avelina Sayfetdinova and Metka Komac before the Lady Raiders pair finished 6-1. Olivia Peet and Cristina Tiglea clinched the doubles point for Texas Tech after they swept Reece Carter and Midori Castillo 6-0 at two singles. 

Singles play did not pan out as planned either with the last three courts resulting in victories for the Lady Raiders. At four singles, Wilkins fell 7-6, 6-1 to Cristina Tiglea and Narendran lost her battle 5-7, 4-6 to Kate Dmitrichenko at five singles. Fry was defeated 6-0, 6-2 at six singles by Arina Oreshchenkova. 

The first three courts split sets with their opponents before Texas Tech clinched the match. Carter lost her first set in a tiebreaker to Komac at three singles then came back to win the second 6-3; she was up one game before the match was called. At two singles, Ziouti fell 4-6 to #106 Sayfetdinova in the first then won the second 6-4; the third set was left at 2-2-2. And at one singles, Castillo won her first set against Peet 6-4 then fell 3-6 in the second before the match was over. 

UC Santa Barbara

Despite dropping the doubles point to the Gauchos, Arizona battled back in singles to grab their first win of the weekend. Ziouti and Fry dropped their match 6-1 to #15 Amelia Honer and Kira Reuter at one doubles, and Wilkins/Carter fell 6-4 to M. Gonzalez-Ballbe and Valentina Khrebtova. Arizona won its first two points on courts five and six due to UCSB only having four active players. Ziouti extended the Cats' lead to 3-1 after defeating Reuter 6-3, 7-5 at two singles, and freshman Carter won her match 6-3, 6-4 against Khrebtova at three singles.

Next up for Women's Tennis is another set of away matches in Montgomery, Ala. for the Blue Gray Classic. Then they are back at home Friday, March 3 to open Pac-12 play against Oregon at 12 p.m. MT.
