TUCSON, Ariz. — An impressive bullpen performance was not enough to get the Arizona Wildcats (3-3) past the West Virginia Mountaineers (4-2) on Saturday, with the visitors coming away victorious, 5-1.
Arizona's relief corp combined to work 4.2 innings and limited West Virginia to just one unearned run on two hits. Right-handers
Derek Drees, George Arias Jr, and
Tony Pluta, along with southpaw
Eric Orloff, combined to issue five strikeouts while allowing zero walks.
Pluta, a freshman making his collegiate debut, worked the final two frames and allowed just one baserunner.
Starting pitcher Anthony Susac (0-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits scattered across 4.1 innings of work; he struck out four.
