Wildcats Win First Conference Match

PULLMAN, Wash. - #57 Arizona defeated Washington State 5-2 on Friday, March 17 to win their first conference match of the season. 

The Wildcats beat the Cougars with one doubles point and three singles wins. Arizona battled for the doubles point after Salma Ziouti and Reece Carter fell 3-6 to Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse at one doubles then Parker Fry and Kayla Wilkins won their match 6-4 against Yurka Nakagawa and Yang Lee at two doubles to even out the playing field. The Wildcat duo are now 5-0 in doubles together. Belen Nevenhoven and Midori Castillo clinched the point 6-4, defeating Hania Abouelsaad and Fifa Kumhom. 

It was a swift round of singles with the 'Cats claiming three straight set victories at six, two and three singles. Freshman and Tucson native Tanvi Narendran picked up the first win at six singles, sweeping Tiffany Phout 6-0 in set one and only letting up one game in the second (6-1). Carter came in clutch at two singles winning 6-1, 6-2 against Nakagawa. The freshman from Canada leads the team in singles holding a 13-2 record. 

Ziouti fell 2-6, 0-6 to Alvarez Sande at one singles giving the Cougars their first win of the day before Castillo clinched 6-3, 6-2 against Tse in the No. 3 lineup spot. She is the second leading Wildcat in singles with a 11 wins so far this spring. Wilkins split sets with Kumhom, losing 3-6 in the first then coming back to win 6-1 in the second before falling 7-10 in a super tiebreak. Fry took the last point of the day, defeating Abouelsaad 7-6(6), 5-7, 10-2. 

Next up for Women's Tennis is a match against #21 Washington on Sunday, March 19 in Seattle, Wash. at 11 a.m. MT. The 'Cats are now 14-6 heading into their third Pac-12 match of the regular season.
