DAVIS NAMED PAC-12 POTW: Arizona star outfielder
Chase Davis has earned his first career Pac-12 Player of the Week selection, the conference announced on Monday afternoon. Davis is the third Wildcat to earn weekly honors from the Pac-12 this season, following first baseman
Kiko Romero last month and right-handed pitcher
TJ Nichols in February. Across four games, in which the Wildcats posted a perfect 4-0 record, Davis hit .688 with seven runs scored, 11 hits, two doubles, one triple, two home runs, and nine RBI. He led the team in batting average, hits, extra-base hits, total bases, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage over that stretch. Davis' performance was one of many standout efforts that led the Wildcats to a 20-0 victory over rival Arizona State last Wednesday and a three-game sweep of Utah over the weekend at Hi Corbett Field. The Elk Grove, California native opened the week with a massive performance on Wednesday, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored, one double, one home run, and a season-high five RBI as the Wildcats rolled the Sun Devils, 20-0. He followed it up with three more multi-hit performances against Utah, including another home run in Sunday's series finale that gave him 32 for his career and moved him into a tie for eighth place on the program leaderboard. Â Overall, Davis scored at least one run, drove in one or more RBI, and collected multiple hits in all four of Arizona's games last week. He extended his career-long on-base streak to 36 games in the process. Davis was also a key contributor on defense, posting an unblemished 1.000 fielding percentage on nine chances with an outfield assist throwing a runner out at home.
MLB WILDCATS: Eight former Wildcats currently find themselves on MLB rosters rosters: Cesar Salazar (Houston Astros), Kevin Newman (Cincinnati Reds), Andrew Nardi (Miami Marlins), Rob Refsnyder (Boston Red Sox), Kevin Ginkel (Arizona Diamondbacks), Tylor Megill (New York Mets), Chase Silseth (Los Angeles Angels), and Mark Melancon (Arizona Diamondbacks). Salazar made the Astros Opening Day roster and made his Major League debut on Sunday, April 12 against the White Sox, becoming the 93rd Wildcat in MLB history. In addition to the eight Wildcats currently in MLB there are seven other former Wildcats currently playing organized baseball who have already made their Major League debuts, along with 17 more who are working hard to earn their first shot.
CRUSH DAVIS: Outfielder
Chase Davis has proven himself to be a prolific power hitter during his collegiate career. After swatting 18 during his sophomore campaign, he has followed up with 14 so far this year to give him 32 career long balls. Davis enters the weekend tied for eighth place on the Wildcats career leaderboard. His 18 home runs last year led the team, ranked third in the Pac-12, and were tied for the sixth most in a single season in program history.
NO FREE RIDES: The Arizona pitching staff has excelled at limiting walks this season, allowing an average of just 3.27 BB/9. Fourteen times this season the Wildcats pitching staff has issued two or fewer walks in a game, highlighted by a zero-walk performance against Arizona State on March 24. Arizona's mark of 3.27 is the second-best mark in the Pac-12 — behind only UCLA (2.87) — and the 15th best mark among all NCAA Division I programs. It also marks a significant improvement from their 2019 mark of 5.33 BB/9.
STARTING STRONG: The Wildcats have more than doubled up opponents through the first two innings of games this year, currently hold a 104-46 scoring advantage across the first and second innings. In the first two innings this year the Wildcats offense has combined to post a .391 batting average with 55 extra-base hits, while the pitching staff has limited opposing offenses to a .295 batting average with just 21 extra-base hits. Overall, Arizona has out-scored their opponents by a margin of 334-230 this year.
EXTRA EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT: Through 38 games, the Arizona offense has combined to swat 186 extra-base hits, the best mark in the Pac-12. The Wildcats are currently averaging 4.9 extra-base hits per game. Arizona has taken advantage of the large dimensions at Hi Corbett Field since moving there in 2012 — in the decade-plus since the move off campus the Wildcats hold the Pac-12 lead with 2,069 extra-base hits (second: Stanford, 1,934). During that stretch Arizona has paced the conference in doubles six times and triples six times.
OFFENSE FOR ALL: The Wildcats are among the top offensives teams in the nation again this season. Arizona is currently averaging 8.8 runs and 12.0 hits per game, numbers that rival the Wildcats 2021 offense that was among the best in program history (8.5 runs, 11.7 hits).
