Leading Off...

  • Hi Corbett Field plays host to a three-game series this weekend between the Arizona Wildcats and Washington Huskies. All three games will be available via live stream and broadcast on Wildcats Radio 1290 AM with play-by-play from Brian Jeffries.
  • The Wildcats lead the all-time series against the Huskies, 40-30, with games dating back to 1992. Arizona has swept each of the last three series against Washington, including a pair of sets in Tucson in 2021 and 2019.
  • Arizona has not dropped a home series to Washington since 2015, when the Huskies took two of three games in Tucson.
  • Outfielder Chase Davis hit his 11th home run of the season on Sunday against Oregon, giving him 29 career home runs. He is two home runs shy of breaking into the Wildcats career Top 10.
  • First baseman Kiko Romero currently ranks among the top five players in the Pac-12 in RBI (1st, 33), doubles (t-1st, 11), slugging percentage (2nd, .755), hits (3rd, 41), home runs (t-3rd, 8), and batting average (5th, .387). Romero and Bingham (32) are currently first and second in the conference in RBI.
  • Arizona's .976 fielding percentage currently ranks third in the Pac-12 behind only Washington (.984) and Oregon State (.977). Their 23 errors are tied for second-fewest in the conference. The Wildcats finished 2022 ninth in the Pac-12 in fielding percentage.
  • The 84 walks issued by Arizona pitchers this year are the second-fewest in the Pac-12. They are walking batters at a BB/9 rate of 3.24.

SOME SERIES THEMES: Hi Corbett Field plays host to a three-game series this weekend between the Arizona Wildcats and Washington Huskies...All three games will be available via live stream and broadcast on Wildcats Radio 1290 AM with play-by-play from Brian Jeffries...The Wildcats lead the all-time series against the Huskies, 40-30, with games dating back to 1992...Arizona has swept each of the last three series against Washington, including a pair of sets in Tucson in 2021 and 2019...Arizona has not dropped a home series to Washington since 2015, when the Huskies took two of three games in Tucson...The Wildcats lead the series over the last five years, 9-3, and over the last 10 years, 15-12...Arizona has played to a 10-5 record at home this season, but has dropped each of their last three contests at Hi Corbett Field...The Wildcats have dropped nine consecutive Pac-12 contests, having suffered road sweeps at UCLA and Arizona State before dropping three at home to Oregon last weekend...Washington dropped their last Pac-12 series to Oregon State at home and won their only conference road series so far this year, taking two-of-three at UCLA two weeks ago...The Huskies are led by first year head coach Jason Kelly who returned to Seattle after serving as Washington's pitching coach from 2013-19.

MLB WILDCATS: Seven former Wildcats currently find themselves on MLB rosters rosters: Cesar Salazar (Houston Astros), Kevin Newman (Cincinnati Reds), Andrew Nardi (Miami Marlins), Rob Refsnyder (Boston Red Sox), Kevin Ginkel (Arizona Diamondbacks), Tylor Megill (New York Mets), and Mark Melancon (Arizona Diamondbacks). Salazar made the Astros Opening Day roster and made his Major League debut on Sunday against the White Sox, becoming the 93rd Wildcat in MLB history. In addition to the seven Wildcats currently in MLB there are eight other former Wildcats currently playing organized baseball who have already made their Major League debuts, along with 17 more who are working hard to earn their first shot.

STREAKONOMICS: No Wildcat currently rides a hit streak longer than three games: Garen Caulfield, Mason White, and Emilio Corona all have active three-game streaks.  The longest hit streak on the team this year belongs to outfielder Chase Davis, who strung together an 11-game streak from Feb. 28 – March 21. Davis (25 games) currently sports the longest on-base streak on the team. Dating back to the end of the 2022 campaign, Davis has reached base safely in 39 consecutive games, the longest streak of his career. Kiko Romero (10 games) also sports an active, extended on-base streak.

WHAT A RELIEF: Wildcats reliever Trevor Long, a multi-year member of the NCBWA's Stopper of the Year Watch List, has logged 11 career saves. He currently ranks 10th on the Wildcats all-time saves leaderboard. Should he match last year's save total of seven and tally 14 career saves, he would move into a tie for fifth all time along with Bobby Dalbec (2014-16) and Ryan Moskau (1997-98). His seven saves last season were tied for 11th most in a single season in program history and ranked tied for fifth in the Pac-12. Dating back to last season, Long has held opponents without an earned run in 36-of-46 appearances.

NO FREE RIDES: The Arizona pitching staff has excelled at limiting walks this season, allowing an average of just 3.24 BB/9. Ten times this season the Wildcats pitching staff has issued two or fewer walks in a game, highlighted by a zero-walk performance against Arizona State on March 24. Arizona's mark of 3.24 is the second-best mark in the Pac-12 — behind only UCLA (2.81) — and the 14th best mark among all NCAA Division I programs. It also marks a significant improvement from their 2019 mark of 5.33 BB/9.

HOME SWEET HOME: Since Arizona Baseball moved to Hi Corbett Field for the 2012 season, the Wildcats have enjoyed a tremendous home field advantage. Over those 11+ seasons, Arizona has posted a record of 259-111, winning games at a .700 clip. Their home winning percentage over that stretch is the third best mark in the conference.

STARTING STRONG: The Wildcats have doubled up opponents through the first two innings of games this year, currently hold a 60-30 scoring advantage across the first and second innings. In the first two innings this year the Wildcats offense has combined to post a .355 batting average with 29 extra-base hits, while the pitching staff has limited opposing offenses to a .281 batting average with just 15 extra-base hits. Overall, Arizona has out-scored their opponents by a margin of 189-161 this year.

EXTRA EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT: Through 26 games, the Arizona offense has combined to swat 117 extra-base hits, the best mark in the Pac-12. The Wildcats are currently averaging 4.5 extra-base hits per game. Arizona has taken advantage of the large dimensions at Hi Corbett Field since moving there in 2012 — in the decade-plus since the move off campus the Wildcats hold the Pac-12 lead with 2,000 extra-base hits (second: Stanford, 1,892). During that stretch Arizona has paced the conference in doubles six times and triples six times.
