Leading Off...

  • The Arizona Wildcats are in California this week for their final Pac-12 road series of the year, a three-game set against the No. 4 ranked Stanford Cardinal.
  • All three games this weekend will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks with Roxy Bernstein and Wes Clements on the call. They will also be broadcast live on Wildcats Radio 1290 AM with play-by-play from Brian Jeffries.
  • Arizona and Stanford have played 200 times with games dating back to 1923. The Cardinal lead the all-time series against the Wildcats, 119-81. Arizona swept a three-game series against Stanford in Tucson last year before the Cardinal responded with a pair of victories over the Wildcats in the 2022 Pac-12 Baseball Tournament.
  • Outfielder Chase Davis hit his 15th and 16th home runs of the season on May 10 against Nevada, giving him 34 career home runs. He is currently tied with David Shermet  (1985-88) for the fifth most home runs in program history. He is one home run shy of a tie for fourth and two shy of breaking into the top three.
  • Dating back to last season, Davis has reached base safely in 59 straight games. His on-base streak is currently tied with what is believed to be the Arizona program record.
  • Infielder Kiko Romero currently leads the Pac-12 and ranks 11th nationally with 68 RBI. He is on pace for 78 RBI through the Wildcats 53 regular season games, which would rank 8th in a single season in program history.
  • Arizona's .977 fielding percentage is third in the Pac-12, a category they ranked ninth in last year.

STREAKONOMICS: Outfielder Chase Davis (45 games) currently sports the longest on-base streak on the team. Dating back to the end of the 2022 campaign, Davis has reached base safely in 59 consecutive games, the longest streak of his career. Davis' 45-game on-base streak is the second longest single-season streak during the StatCrew era (1998-current), while his 49-game streak ties what is believed to be the Arizona program record. Cole Frenzel (2010-11) and Todd Trafton (1984-85) also put together 59-game on-base streaks that spanned multiple seasons. Cameron LaLiberte (16 games) and Brendan Summerhill (15 games) both sport active, extended on-base streaks. Davis currently boasts the longest active hit streak on the team, at six games. Infielder Mason White saw his team-best 17-game hit streak end on Tuesday, May 2 at Grand Canyon.

MLB WILDCATS: Eight former Wildcats currently find themselves on MLB rosters rosters: Cesar Salazar (Houston Astros), Kevin Newman (Cincinnati Reds), Andrew Nardi (Miami Marlins), Rob Refsnyder (Boston Red Sox), Kevin Ginkel (Arizona Diamondbacks), Tylor Megill (New York Mets), Chase Silseth (Los Angeles Angels), and Mark Melancon (Arizona Diamondbacks). Salazar made the Astros Opening Day roster and made his Major League debut on Sunday, April 12 against the White Sox, becoming the 93rd Wildcat in MLB history. In addition to the eight Wildcats currently in MLB there are seven other former Wildcats currently playing organized baseball who have already made their Major League debuts, along with 15 more who are working hard to earn their first shot.

CRUSH DAVIS: Outfielder Chase Davis has proven himself to be a prolific power hitter during his collegiate career. After swatting 18 during his sophomore campaign, he has followed up with 16 so far this year to give him 34 career long balls. Davis enters the weekend tied for fifth place on the Wildcats career leaderboard. His 18 home runs last year led the team, ranked third in the Pac-12, and were tied for the sixth most in a single season in program history. His 16 home runs this year are currently tied for the conference lead and Top 50 nationally.

STARTING STRONG: The Wildcats have nearly doubled up opponents through the first two innings of games this year, currently hold a 116-62 scoring advantage across the first and second innings. In the first two innings this year the Wildcats offense has combined to post a .380 batting average with 60 extra-base hits, while the pitching staff has limited opposing offenses to a .309 batting average with just 26 extra-base hits. Overall, Arizona has out-scored their opponents by a margin of 389-285 (+104) this season.

NO FREE RIDES: The Arizona pitching staff has excelled at limiting walks this season, allowing an average of just 3.54 BB/9. Sixteen times this season the Wildcats pitching staff has issued two or fewer walks in a game, highlighted by a zero-walk performance against Arizona State on March 24. Arizona's mark of 3.54 is the second-best mark in the Pac-12 — behind only UCLA (3.12) — and the 25th best mark among all NCAA Division I programs. It also marks a significant improvement from their 2019 mark of 5.33 BB/9.

EXTRA EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT: Through 46 games, the Arizona offense has combined to swat 214 extra-base hits, the best mark in the Pac-12. The Wildcats are currently averaging 4.7 extra-base hits per game. Arizona has taken advantage of the large dimensions at Hi Corbett Field since moving there in 2012 — in the decade-plus since the move off campus the Wildcats hold the Pac-12 lead with 2,097 extra-base hits (second: Stanford, 1,977). During that stretch Arizona has paced the conference in doubles six times and triples six times.

OFFENSE FOR ALL: The Wildcats are among the top offensives teams in the nation again this season. Arizona is currently averaging 8.5 runs and 11.7 hits per game, numbers that rival the Wildcats 2021 offense that was among the best in program history (8.5 runs, 11.7 hits).
