SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (31-23) scored early and often, never looking back in a 12-3 runaway victory over in-state rival Arizona State (31-23) on Tuesday morning at the Pac-12 Tournament.
Shortstop
Nik McClaughry, fresh off being named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, got the scoring started with a solo home run in the first inning. Right fielder
Emilio Corona added two more with a triple and second baseman
Mason White completed a four-run opening frame with a sacrifice fly.
That was all the offense the Wildcats would need, however they would still go on to score one run in the second, four in the fourth, and three in the seventh to put the game entirely out of reach.
Starting pitcher
Aiden May was electric, spinning one of his best outings of the season to earn the win and improve to 5-2 on the year. The right-hander worked six one-run innings and struck out three while allowing just four hits, all singles.
Freshman right-hander
Casey Hintz entered in the eighth and got the final four outs of the game for Arizona, ultimately working 1.1 innings without allowing a baserunner.
