TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (1-0) pitched their way to an impressive 6-1 Opening Night victory over the No. 23 Northeastern Huskies (0-1) on Friday night at Hi Corbett Field.
Starting pitcher
Jackson Kent (1-0) and right-handed reliever
Raul Garayzar combined to hold the Huskies to just one run on four hits while striking out 12. Kent's eight strikeouts were a career high, while Garayzar picked up his first career save with three perfect innings of relief.
Right fielder
Emilio Corona and shortstop
Mason White, both of whom were named to the Bobby Bragan National Collegiate Slugger Award Watch List on Thursday, led the way on offense with a pair of hits each. Corona, coming off an 11-home run campaign last year, swatted a two-run dinger in the third inning to give the Wildcats a comfortable 4-1 lead.
The one run allowed by Kent and Garayzar is the fewest surrendered by the Wildcats since shutting out Arizona State, 20-0, in a midweek game last April.
Two true freshmen,
Easton Breyfogle and
Andrew Cain, both picked up their first career hits. Breyfogle legged out a triple in his first collegiate at-bat, while Cain dropped a single into left field in the sixth inning.
