TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (2-1) secured a season-opening ranked series win over the No. 23 Northeastern Huskies (1-2) with a 9-3 victory in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at sunny Hi Corbett Field.
Arizona's offense erupted early, posting a five-run second inning that would prove to be enough to win the game.
Easton Breyfogle opened the scoring with a double that scored
Adonys Guzman after a Northeastern error.
Brendan Summerhill and
Mason White both drove in multiple runs in the second as well.
The Wildcats scored three more in the fourth and a final run in the fifth to polish off their scoring. Right fielder
Emilio Corona hit his second home run of the weekend in the fourth inning, a two-run blast that easily cleared the wall in left-center field.
Starting pitcher Anthony Susac worked four scoreless innings with four strikeouts but did not factor into the decision. Right-hander
Cam Walty (1-0) followed Susac and posted three innings of relief to earn his first win of the year.
