Arizona’s Offense Explodes in Doubleheader Sweep

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Wildcats improved to 13-1 following a pair of comeback wins over Indiana and Marshall on Friday night. Arizona beat Indiana 6-3 in the first game and run-ruled Marshall 12-4 in game two.
 
Game 1 | Arizona 6, Indiana 3
The Wildcats won the first game against Indiana, 6-3, in a back-and-forth matchup. Arizona totaled nine hits with four Wildcats recording two hits each. Carlie Scupin hit her sixth home run of the season in the win.
 
Indiana scored one run in the first inning on a RBI single, but Scupin answered with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning to give Arizona the lead.
 
In the top of the fourth, the Hoosiers took a 3-2 lead on a two-run home run. Arizona then scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead. The first two runs were scored on throwing errors by Indiana and Regan Shockey scored from second base on a wild pitch to plate the third run of the inning.
 
The Cats added one more run on a sacrifice fly from Olivia DiNardo in the sixth inning.
 
In the circle, Aissa Silva earned the win to improve to 6-0. She pitched the final four innings in relief and held Indiana scoreless while striking out four batters. Miranda Stoddard pitched the first three innings, allowing Indiana's three runs.
 
Game 2 | Arizona 12, Marshall 4 (6 innings)
Arizona run-ruled Marshall in the nightcap on a walk-off single to win, 12-4, in six innings. The Cats had 11 hits, with Shockey leading the team with three hits. Sophomore Tayler Biehl hit her first career home run and went 2-for-2 with three RBI and two walks.
 
Marshall hit a solo home run in the first inning to take an early lead.
 
In the second inning, Biehl hit her two-run home run to give Arizona the 2-1 lead in the game. The Thundering Herd regained the lead with a two-run homer in the top of the third.
 
Arizona tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning with an RBI single from Shockey. In the top of the fifth, Marshall drove in one run with an RBI single.
 
The Wildcats' offense exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning to take a 10-4 lead. Paige Dimler gave Arizona the lead with a two-RBI double to open the scoring. Biehl hit an RBI double and Shockey drove in a pair of runs on a single. Scupin brought in the final two runs of the inning with her third double of the season.
 
Arizona walked-off Marshall in the sixth inning with an RBI fielder's choice from Jasmine Perezchica and an RBI single from Shockey.
 
Brooke Mannon (4-0) earned the win after pitching the final 1.2 innings and only allowing one hit. Silva started the game, going 1.2 innings, striking out three, but allowing one run. Stoddard entered in relief for Silva and allowed three runs before Mannon closed out the game.

Arizona will continue the Hillenbrand Invitational with a doubleheader against Indiana and Marshall on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 4 and 6 p.m. MST.
