Wildcats, Sun Devils Play Three at Hi Corbett

| By:
TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (7-8, 2-1) and Arizona State Sun Devils (7-9, 1-2) face off in the three-game Territorial Cup series this weekend at Hi Corbett Field.

All three games will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks, while Sunday's game will be broadcast live on Wildcats Radio 1290 AM.

Tickets for the weekend are still available and can be purchased here. Friday's festivities will be highlighted by a ceremonial first pitch from Arizona alumni and Diamondbacks star pitcher, Kevin Ginkel. Friday will also serve as ZonaZoo night, with the first 200 students in attendance receiving a free t-shirt. A full slate of promotions for the weekend can be found here.

Arizona went on the road last weekend and won their first Pac-12 Conference series of the season, taking two-of-three games from the USC Trojans. They will look to keep that momentum rolling against their in-state rivals this weekend in front of a strong home crowd.

STREAKONOMICS: No Wildcat has an active hit streak of five games or more. The longest hit streak this season belongs to true freshman outfielder Easton Breyfogle, who hit safely in each of his first seven career collegiate games. Outfielder Brendan Summerhill (9 games), infielder Mason White (7 games), and infielder Richie Morales (6 games) all currently sport extended on-base streaks. Breyfogle also owns the longest on-base streak on the team this year, having reached base safely in each of his first 13 career collegiate games.

HOME SWEET HOME: Since Arizona Baseball moved to Hi Corbett Field for the 2012 season, the Wildcats have enjoyed a tremendous home field advantage. Over those 12+ seasons, Arizona has posted a home record of 275-115, winning games at a .705 clip. Their home winning percentage over that stretch is the second best mark in the conference, while their 275 home victories are tops in the conference.

EXTRA EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT: Arizona has consistently taken advantage of the large dimensions at Hi Corbett Field since moving there in 2012 — in the decade-plus since the move off campus, the Wildcats hold the Pac-12 lead with 2,210 extra-base hits (second: Stanford, 2,103). During that stretch Arizona has paced the conference in doubles seven times and triples seven times.

NOTHING BUT NETZ: Fifth-year senior Dawson Netz has established himself as one of the most experienced pitchers in Arizona Baseball history. Going into this weekend, Netz has logged 77 appearances in his collegiate career — 14 starts and 63 relief — tied for the seventh most games pitched in Wildcat history. He is just four appearances shy of moving into a tie for sixth place with Ben White (1993-96), the father of Dawson's current teammate, Mason White. If he were to match his team-leading 32 appearances from last season, he would move into sole possession of first place with 106 games pitched.

ROAD FROM THE SHOW: Arizona Baseball, a program that proudly boasts 280 Major League Baseball Draft selections and 94 alumni MLB players, also currently has five players on the roster with MLB ties in their bloodlines. Between those five players, the Wildcats relatives have logged 44 years and 1,357 games worth of Major League service time.

GINKEL FIRST PITCH: Fresh off a career-best season and a run to the World Series with the Arizona Diamondbacks, former Arizona Baseball star pitcher Kevin Ginkel will return to Tucson this Friday, March 15 to throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the Wildcats game against Arizona State. Last October, Ginkel played a pivotal role in the Diamondbacks postseason run and ultimately became just the 10th former Wildcat player to advance all the way to the World Series. Following a regular season in which he posted a 9-1 record and a 2.48 ERA across 60 appearances, the towering right-hander logged an astounding 10 scoreless postseason outings. The San Diego native logged one season with the Wildcats in 2016, going 5-1 with a 2.80 ERA and 45 strikeouts over 64.1 innings of work. His most impressive work came during the 2016 postseason as Arizona advanced all the way to the College World Series finals — during that run Ginkel made six appearances with two starts and went 2-0 with one save and a 1.89 ERA.

CHASING MILESTONES: Arizona Baseball is just five wins shy of registering 3,000 all-time victories. The Wildcats would join the ranks of just nine other programs to boast 3,000 program wins. As it currently stands, Arizona is the 10th all-time winningest program in the history of college baseball. Four of the winningest programs in college baseball history are current members of the Pac-12 Conference.

SHORTSTOP SLUGGERS: Sophomore infielder Mason White, the Wildcats everyday shortstop this season, currently leads the team and the Pac-12 with seven home runs through the first 15 games of the season. Dating back through the 1998 season (StatCrew era), only three Arizona shortstops have hit more home runs in a single season. White is just two home runs shy of tying Jason Donald's nine dingers in the 2004 season.
