TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Track & Field opens their 2024 outdoor season at home on Saturday with the Arizona Spring Break Fiesta at Drachman Stadium. It will be the first of five home meets this outdoor season for the Wildcats.
Â
"We are very excited to open the outdoor season," said Head Coach
Fred Harvey. "There are many events that we excel in that aren't contested during indoors, so now we get the opportunity to see who we are. The Arizona Spring Break Fiesta is a new competition that helps the budget and brings high level competition to Wildcat Country."
Â
2024 marks the first year that the Arizona Spring Break Fiesta has been held by the Wildcats. The competition begins at 9:00 a.m. MST on Saturday with the field events. Track events get underway at 1:00 p.m. MST. Other competing teams at the meet include Arizona St., BYU, Grand Canyon, Mesa CC, New Mexico St., NAU, Park Gilbert, Pima CC, UNLV, Utah St., UTEP, Washington St., and Western New Mexico. Live results can be found
here.
Â
This marks the first competition for the Wildcats since the end of indoor season. Although no Wildcats qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, the team had a number of top performers during the season. Senior
Trayvion White-Austin broke school records in both the 60m (6.63) and 200m (20.64) to become just one of three Wildcats to currently hold multiple men's individual indoor school records. He currently ranks third in Wildcat history in the outdoor 100m and fourth in the outdoor 200m.
Â
Zach Landa led the Arizona Men with three individual event wins during the season in the shot put. Landa finished in the top four in seven of the eight event competitions he competed in during the indoor season. He was one of three Wildcat shot putters to win the event during the season, with the other two being
Youssef Koudssi and freshman
Tyler Michelini. The trio, along with
Michael Ogbeiwi, were ranked as the number one men's shot put group in the nation in the final USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings.
Â
Additionally, Landa currently ranks fourth in program history in the outdoor shot put and Koudssi ranks sixth in the shot put and ninth in the discus. Koudssi was an All-American in the discus last season. The outdoor season will also allow javelin thrower
Jared O'Riley to compete in his first meet of the season since the javelin is not offered as an indoor event. O'Riley won the event last season at the Pac-12 Championships and ranks fourth in school history.
Â
For the Arizona Women,
Tapenisa Havea led the team during the indoor season with three event wins in the shot put. Havea ranks sixth all-time in the discus and ninth in the outdoor shot put. She is the only returning women who has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Other past qualifiers include Koudssi, Landa, O'Riley, White-Austin,
Isaac Davis,
Brian Limage,
James Onanubosi, and
Reinaldo Rodrigues. Additionally in the women's long jump,
Jenica Bosko currently ranks second in school history, while
Taylen Wise ranks third in the triple jump entering the outdoor season.
Â
The indoor season also brought a handful of record-breaking performances for the Wildcats. In the last competition of the season,
Reinaldo Rodrigues broke the meet record at the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invite in the long jump. Additionally, high jumper
Diana Ramos became the Venezuelan National Women's Indoor High Jump Record Holder. Ramos will compete unattached during the outdoor season. Finally,
Joseph Green got the opportunity to represent Guam at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland this year and became the Guamanian National Men's Indoor 60m Record Holder at the championship event.
Â
Over the course of the indoor season, 15 different Wildcats won 21 total individual events. More information on results from the indoor season can be found
here. The Arizona Spring Break Fiesta will also be the first chance for the Wildcats' 31 newcomers to make their home outdoor debuts for the team.
Â
A meet recap will be posted
