TUCSON, Ariz. — A two-run home run off the bat of
Mason White capped what was likely the most dramatic weekend of baseball in the history of Hi Corbett Field. The shortstop's blast to right field gave the Arizona Wildcats (13-13, 7-5) their third consecutive walk-off win over the UCLA Bruins (10-15, 4-8) and polished off a series sweep.
UCLA sent the game to extra innings with six runs over the final two innings and took the lead in the top of the 12th. Catcher
Blake McDonald opened the bottom of the 12th with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Brandon Rogers before White clobbered a ball onto the roof of the Terry Francona Hitting Center to seal the victory.
With the win, Arizona completed their first series sweep of the season and their first sweep of the Bruins since taking all three games at Hi Corbett Field in 2018.
Starting pitcher
Cam Walty did not factor into the decision after working 4.0 one-run innings. The right-hander surrendered five hits and struck out two.
The Wildcats used nine relievers to cover the remaining eight innings, five of which did not allow an earned run. Chief among them were right-handers
Tony Pluta and
Dawson Netz (1-0), the former of which posted two perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts, and the latter of which worked the final two outs of the 12th inning and earned his first win of the year.
