Wildcats Defeat Cougars, 7-1, Win Ninth Straight Pac-12 Game

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (23-14, 12-5) used a complete effort to blaze past the Washington State Cougars (18-19, 7-13) on a final score of 7-1 in front of 4,134 fans on Saturday night at Hi Corbett Field.

Arizona has now won 14 of their last 16 games, nine consecutive Pac-12 Conference games, and nine straight home contests. The Wildcats enter Sunday's action in sole possession of first place in the Pac-12.

The Wildcats offense pounded out nine hits, six of which went for extra bases, and drew four walks to produce seven runs. Third baseman Maddox Mihalakis led the charge, driving in three runs on a trio of doubles, giving him the first three-double game by a Wildcat this season.

Starting pitcher Clark Candiotti earned the win and improved to 4-1 on the year behind a six-inning, one-run effort. Right-handers Casey Hintz and Anthony Susac combined to toss the final three innings and allowed just two hits while striking out five.

Arizona and Washington State shut each other out in the first three innings before the Cougars struck for their first and only run in the top of the fourth. The Wildcats responded with a run in the bottom of the frame and took the lead with a two-run fifth inning. Arizona never looked back, extending their lead to the final margin of 7-1 with a four-run seventh inning.
