STILLWATER, Okla. - No. 22 Colton Smith defeated No. 8 Oliver Tarvet [6] 6-2, 6-4 on Tuesday in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships, earning the first ITA Singles All-American status of his career. He is the first All-American, singles or doubles, from the Arizona program since Roger Matalonga earned singles honors in 2006.
Smith served to open the match and took an early 4-0 lead, breaking twice to hold Tarvet without a game won. Tarvet won the next two games, but Smith took the first set 6-2 over the tournament's sixth-seeded player.
In the second set, Smith and Tarvet traded games the entire way until the score was 4-4. Smith held to go up 5-4 and broke for match point, defeating Tarvet 6-2, 6-4. The win is Smith's 17th over a nationally-ranked player this season.
Smith will face No. 16 Nishesh Basavareddy [9-16] of Stanford in the round of 16 Wednesday, May 22 at 8:00 a.m. MST.
