Cam Walty Selected by Cleveland Guardians in MLB Draft

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona Baseball starting pitcher Cam Walty was selected by the Cleveland Guardians in the 20th round of the 2024 MLB Draft on Tuesday afternoon, wrapping up the Wildcats assortment of picks.

Walty, the No. 595 overall selection in the Draft, was the fourth Arizona pitcher taken during this years proceedings, marking the pitchers most the program has seen selected since the 2013 Draft.

The veteran right-handed slotted into the Wildcats starting rotation during the third week of the season and never looked back, producing what would ultimately amount to an All-America campaign. Walty led the team and tied for the Pac-12 lead with eight wins, going 8-2 with a remarkable 3.29 ERA and 75 strikeouts. His command was historically great, issuing just 13 walks in 90.1 innings to post a 1.30 BB/9 rate that was the third best in program history and the fifth best in the nation last year.

Walty was on the mound for both of Arizona's Pac-12 championship clinching games, throwing 8.1 innings against Oregon State on May 18 and 8.0 innings on May 25 against USC; in the former the Wildcats secured their sixth all-time Pac-12 regular season title, while in the latter Arizona picked up its first-ever Pac-12 Tournament crown.

Along with LHP Jackson Kent and RHP Clark Candiotti, both of whom were selected on day two of the draft, Walty completed the trio of Arizona starting pitchers who all earned Pac-12 All-Conference honors en route to earning MLB Draft selections. It was believed to be the first time in program history that three starting pitchers earned All-Conference recognition.

Over the course of his two-year Arizona career, Walty went 13-3 with a 4.36 ERA and 124 strikeouts. He limited opposing hitters to a .285 batting average and surrendered just 21 walks over 140.1 innings of work.
