09/26/2024 | Cross Country
TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Cross Country is set to host their annual home meet, the Dave Murray Invitational, on Saturday at the Tucson Country Club.
The competition begins at 7:00 a.m. MST with the men's 8k and finishes with the women's 6k at 7:35 a.m. MST. The races will be run at the Tucson Country Club Golf Course. Other competing teams include Grand Canyon, New Mexico St., UTEP, NAU, USC, and Western New Mexico. Entry is free and open to the public. Live results for Saturday can be found here.
"We are excited to host the 2024 edition of the Dave Murray Invitational at Tucson Country Club this weekend," said Head Coach Bernard Lagat. "The Dave Murray Invitational will be our third competition this season and our athletes are well prepared, rested, and determined to shine at home in front of their families, teammates, and the Wildcat fans in the Tucson community. The team will be aggressive from the start. Gideon and Ian will lead the pack for the men's team while Lydia Russell will make her debut on the women's team. Alisa was the top finisher from our last competition and I expect similar results from her this week after some great training leading up to this race."
The Wildcats were last in action at the Cougar Classic in Colfax, Wash. At the competition, the men's team placed fourth and the women's team finished eighth. The men were led by Gideon Mengich, who finished first for the team and sixth overall in the 8k with a personal best time of 23:59.4. Mengich has been the top finisher for the team in both of their competitions so far this year. For the women, senior Alisa Lyesina was the top finisher, as she placed 38th overall in the 6k.
Runners two through five for the men were Ian Sanchez Lopez, Cooper Quigley, Michael Urbanski, and Mateo Pimienta. Sanchez Lopez placed 12th overall, Quigley finished 16th, and Urbanski ended in 25th. Runners two through five for the women were Laina Friedmann, Brooklyn Hanania, Kara Mickelson, and Eleanor Korten Kamp. At the team's season opening meet, the NMSU Lori Fitzgerald Open, the women finished second and the men placed third as a team. The women's team featured runners from Arizona's triathlon team, including Molly Lakustiak who finished first for the team and fifth overall.
