Wildcats Go 4-0 in First Week of Dual Match Play

TUCSON, Ariz.- After sweeping LMU and UCSD Friday, the Cats are now 4-0 after taking down #68 Cal Poly and NAU.

Monday morning started off great for Arizona as they secured the doubles point against Cal Poly. Court 2 was first to finish as Belen Nevenhoven and Josie Usereau took down Amy Leather and Sarah MacCallum (CP) 6-3. Court 3 secured the doubles point for the Cats as Teja Tirunelveli and Danielle Tuhten defeated Natalie Lynch and Jessica MacCallum (CP) 7-5. In singles play, Tanvi Narendran was first to extend the lead for the Cats, taking down Jessica MacCallum (CP) 7-6(7-4), 6-2. Following shortly after was Usereau, defeating Romane Mosse (CP) 7-6(7-4), 6-4. Freshman Zoya Chulak clinched the match for Arizona as she battled to a third set, taking down Sarah MacCallum 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. 

In their afternoon match against NAU, the Cats gained the lead after securing the doubles point once again. Midori Castillo and Martyna Ostrzygalo defeated Elen Jantacova and Daryna Shoshyna (NAU) 6-1. Following shortly after was Nevenhoven and Tuhten, taking down Andrea Noguera and Ruslana Kovalenko (NAU) 6-1. The Lumberjacks were able to narrow the Cats' lead after two singles victories, but Arizona still pulled away with the win. On court 1, Castillo came back after being down in her first set and defeated Patryca Niewiadomska (NAU) 7-5, 6-3. Narendran defeated Elen Jantacova in a straight set win 6-4, 6-2. On court 3 Tirunelveli defeated her opponent after winning the tiebreaker in her first set, 7-6(8-6), 6-3. It was a big weekend for Chulak as she clinched the match once again, taking down Leontina Stojanovic (NAU) in a 3-set-breaker 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. 

The Cats will be back in action this Friday, January 24th, for the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Malibu, California. Arizona will compete against #10 Pepperdine and Georgia Tech or Florida State for a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Tournament.
