Cornfield Leads Arizona to 15-Point Victory Over CSU Bakersfield

TUCSON, Ariz. - Noelani Cornfield scored a game-high 22 points, dished out nine assists, grabbed six rebounds, and recorded four steals, and the Arizona women's basketball team limited CSU Bakersfield to just 33.8 percent shooting from the field en route to a 78-63 victory.  

The Wildcats (6-0) led for 38 minutes and 39 seconds throughout the contest, as they controlled the game from start to finish.  

Cornfield was sensational, as she set season-high marks in minutes (40), points, and rebounds, as she led the way for the Wildcats. Cornfield was highly efficient from the field, knocking down 7-12 shots, in addition to draining a perfect 8-8 shots at the free throw line. 

Mickayla Purdue also had an impressive performance, finishing second on the team with 14 points on 5-9 shooting from the field.  

Mireia Jurdao chipped in 11 points and six rebounds, while Daniah Trammell added nine points and six boards of her own. Sumayah Sugapong had a solid all-around outing, as she scored six points, corralled six rebounds, recorded four assists, and tallied two steals.  

Arizona shot 50 percent from the field throughout the contest, and the Wildcats recorded 18 assists on 30 made field goals.  

Defensively, Arizona locked down the Roadrunners (2-5), as they posted 12 steals and forced CSU Bakersfield into 17 turnovers, while limiting them to clips of 33.8 percent from the field and 30.0 percent from beyond the arc.  

Arizona came out strong to start the contest, as they managed to build a 13-5 lead at the first media timeout of the night.  

The Wildcats extended their lead up to 12 points at the 3:21 mark in the first quarter, and they held a 22-13 advantage entering the second stanza. 

Arizona maintained at least a six-point lead throughout the second period, and the Wildcats went into halftime leading 35-27. 

Midway through the third quarter, Arizona extended their lead up to 15 points, marking the largest lead of the game so far. The Wildcats continued to lead by double digits through the end of the quarter, as they held a 62-52 lead ahead of the final period.  

CSUB trimmed the deficit down to eight points at the 6:01 mark in the fourth quarter; however, Arizona responded by ripping off an 8-0 run to take a 76-60 lead with 1:37 to go and put the game out of reach. The Wildcats went on to earn the 78-63 victory and remain undefeated, as they improved to 6-0.  

Arizona will return to the court Wednesday, Dec. 3 when they are slated to host Southern University at McKale Memorial Center with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
