TUCSON, Ariz. — Utah opened Big 12 play with a 63–62 win over Arizona on Monday afternoon at McKale Center.
The Wildcats (9–3, 0–1 Big 12) erased an 18-point deficit in the second half and had a chance to tie or take the lead in the final seconds, but Utah (10–3, 1–0 Big 12) held on to secure the victory.
Arizona led 19–15 after the first quarter before Utah outscored the Wildcats 24–4 in the second to take a 39–23 halftime lead. Arizona responded after the break, outscoring Utah 20–14 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 53–43 entering the fourth.
The Wildcats continued to chip away in the final period, outscoring Utah 19–10 and pulling within one point late. Arizona was unable to convert on its final possession.
Utah was led by Lani White with 26 points. Reese Ross added 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Mickayla Perdue led Arizona with 16 points. Noelani Cornfield finished with 11 points and 10 assists, and Tanyuel Welch added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Utah shot 39.4 percent from the field, while Arizona finished at 37.3 percent. Arizona forced 15 turnovers and scored 12 fast-break points.
Arizona continues Big 12 play with their first road test of the season at Colorado on Dec. 31st.
